Nanospore+Cool Hunting: Guide to LA by Ami Kealoha

On a recent trip to Los Angeles, the locals who head up the multi-media design studio Nanospore tipped Cool Hunting to some of the freshest new spots and a few old standbys. Perfect jumping off points for a day-long layover, here's proof that LA's more than just Grauman's Chinese Theatre, freeways, and the Getty.

Among Chinatown vendors, restaurants, and a growing crop of galleries, Lion's Den has set up shop to offer a selection of apparel, sneakers, and accessories that reflect owner Raymond Tseng's design sensibilities that come from growing up Asian American in LA. Check out a short video about it on Turn Here.

This unassuming grocery in Santa Monica is a great place pick up gourmet imported treats, but the Bay Cities Italian Deli is more well-known their classic sandwiches made on bread baked fresh every hour. Try the Poorboy or Godmother for a delicious sandwich under $6.

Low key and well-designed, the Avalon in Beverly Hills is a welcome alternative the over-hyped scenes at other hotels. Like Nanospore's Paul Hwang puts it, "you can't go wrong with any hotel that has cabanas and a pool view."

Fiber and Fellow Fall/Winter 09
Fiber & Fellow has been on our radar for some time now, but we are especially impressed with their upcoming Fall/Winter 09 collection which is due out late this Summer. Based out of Long Beach, California, Fiber & Fellow's latest menswear collection might fit better in the woods than on the beach. What I like most is the blend of traditional and contemporary styles...
Ludwig Boutique
Using fabric and accoutrements from vintage dead-stock, Ludwig offers streetwear apparel with a twist. Ludwig's new L.A. store, located on the outskirts of Chinatown, features tastefully done pieces for men. Stocked with classics like well-constructed nylon parkas (pictured right) and plaid button-downs for the Ivy League set (pictured below), they also offer the obligatory graphic-inspired tees and caps. Among the more casual gear is...
Palihouse Holloway Hotel, Los Angeles
Just down the hill from the hustle and bustle of Sunset Boulevard sits the Palihouse Holloway Hotel. I recently had the opportunity to stay at the quiet, NYC apartment-style hotel in the heart of West Hollywood and was expectedly pleased. Perfect for an extended stay, the tucked-away boutique spot has all the amenities of being at home—the one we wish we had—including a full...
Hotel Chic and Basic Born, Barcelona
For a holiday spent taking in Barcelona's seamless blend of old and new architecture, food and sounds, the sublime Chic and Basic Hotel couldn't be more well-suited. Located in the trendy Born area, it's an ideal jumping-off spot for wandering the many narrow, meandering streets of the city's neighboring areas. But it's the hotel itself that symbolizes so much of what we consider Barcelona...
