Cool Hunting
While in San Francisco last week I stumbled upon the best cappuccino I've had in ages at Blue Bottle Coffee Co—purveyors of beans and beverages made from fair trade, organically grown coffee. Blue Bottle has sort of a make-shift store front on the street side of Earl Gonzalez and Tad Longmaid's Linden, a custom furniture workshop at 315 Linden Street. The beans are roasted, exhaled and blended in small batches at their Oakland headquarters across the bay. Each batch is only 21 lbs. (5 to 6 times smaller than average commercial roasters) which allows them to carefully inspect and control their product. Blue Bottle currently offers 13 different blends and is available online. Though given how small the batches are, I'm not yet sure how easy it is to get some.

Apparently, mythological creatures aren't only found in forests and lakes these days. Urbanyetti has been sited in cities worldwide, on t-shirts, and on this (suitably scared-looking) baby's onesie. The brainchild of San Francisco-based artist and one-time Nickolodeon prop designer Aaron Terry, adult sizes come in either black or baby blue, onesies are on soft white, and they're all silkscreened on 100% cotton American Apparel....
You may already be familiar with the Swiss company, Freitag. They're known for their trendy-yet-individual bags made from old truck tarps. A couple of things you may not know are: the bags were first tested for durability on the back of a bike messenger out in San Francisco and that they outsource production to a factory that employs people with disabilities. Now that you're...
Fashion label Nice Collective was started by self-described "nice guys" Joe Haller and Ian Hannula shortly after the two met at a club in San Francisco in 1995. Inspired by music, art, technology, performance, reptiles and spiders, science, Ian's military experience and the San Francisco scene, the two set out to create experiences for themselves and their friends. Clothing quickly materialized as a core...
by Julie Wolfson Just about a year ago, at the age of six, Oscar Youd made root beer for his science project. With some help from his parents Jessica and Tim, his project was such a hit at school that it spawned a new line of root beer called Margo's Bark. Made with all-natural cane sugar and micro-brewed in Los Angeles, the family named Margo's...
by Laura Neilson Nepal seems like an unlikely source for skateboards inspired by the '70s surfing scene, but Arniko Skateboards shines a light on the Himalayan country's long-standing identity as region rich with traditional woodcarvers—an ideal production site for the socially-responsible brand with a global consumer base. Founded two years ago by Nepalese-born Marius Arniko Arter, Arniko Skateboards is a Swiss company that works with...
by Ariston Anderson When Ken Tanabe stumbled upon the Supreme Court case Loving vs. Virginia, which legalized interracial marriage in the U.S., he was shocked that there was no holiday to commemorate the occasion. So he decided to start his own. "I realized that most people had never heard of this civil rights milestone," he tells CH. "I started Loving Day to fight prejudice against...
