Cool Hunting
After two years in the making, the collaboration between Grammy-nominated artists Cee-Lo and Dangermouse (aka Gnarls Barkley), St. Elsewhere debuted this week in the UK and comes out 9 May 2006 stateside. Already breaking records, Dangermouse blends diverse genres including soul, gospel, funk, and post-punk, with Cee-Lo's impressive vocals that hint at seminal crooners like Stevie Wonder. The upshot falls somewhere in between Sly and the Family Stone and Outkast.
Like Dangermouse's long list of other projects (including The Grey Album, Gorillaz, and DangerDOOM), the loosely conceptual album also boasts some compelling visual counterparts, such as the video for the lauded single "Crazy" pictured above. Based on Rorschach inkblot tests, the Robert Hale-directed video, fluidly morphs (mostly black and white) illustrations that incorporate images of Cee-Lo's bald dome, Dangermouse, flames, spiders, trees, and other imagery.
Check it out here and pre-order the album ($12) from Amazon.

By now Slick Rick's "Children's Story" is a frat party standard and KRS-One's elementary style is a page in hip-hop history. With The Next Best Thing, a Jeremy Fish-illustrated picture book and read-along 7-inch by Aesop Rock, the duo are reinventing hip-hop storytelling for a new generation. A monologue on creative frustrations ("To my heart of gold medics with aesthetics on a string you...
Long the de facto home of techno music, it's no surprise that Berlin is bursting at the seams with electronic music. But it is a rare feat when one of these artists transcends the club scene like Modeselektor. A staple of the German capital's underground party circuit dating back to the mid-'90s, the group produces a genre-straddling brand of glitchy beats that are equal...
Le Loup: The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations Millennium General Assembly A weird mixture of banjos, percussion and computer sounds Le Loup creates an experimental sound that's still fun listening. Based on Sam Simkoff's original cheap recordings of a hodge-podge of inexpensive instruments, such as toy glockenspiels and an old banjo, and recorded using the microphone and recording software included with...
By now you've likely already seen and loved Justice's award-winning "D.A.N.C.E." video and you likely also noticed that several of the animated tees featured in the video might make a pretty good addition to your own repertoire. Fortunately, a user of the DIY t-shirt printing site Bountee took it upon themselves to interpret a version of the multi-colored zig-zag tee. (The shirt above right...
Australian artist Luke Feldman's exhibition of visual and audio artworks, "The Whimsical World of Skaffs," opens at Seattle's Bluebottle Art Gallery today, 2 October 2007 and runs through 30 October 2007. Combining visual works with atmospheric music (also composed by Feldman), the world of Skaffs is an AV experience, evidently. With illustrations composed of simple bold lines, vibrant colors give Feldman's compositions movement and...
