CH Video - Nugroove v1: Ellis and Arnold Live

by Josh Rubin

Cool Hunting and Missing Pieces Nugroove v1: Ellis and Arnold Live Welcome to the first episode in our new CH Video series, Nugroove—an exploration of musicians who are able to expand both what we hear and think. This episode focuses on two critically acclaimed Detroit musicians; Jeremy Ellis and John Arnold. Ellis and Arnold have been playing together in an experimental live electronic format for over a decade. On Friday 24 March 2006, during the Winter Music Conference week in Miami, Arnold and Ellis performed an eclectic set of sounds that touched nearly every style and taste—in one improvised set they manifested a sonic tour through jazz, soul and funk to latin, rock, techno, electro, breaks and hip hop. The show took place as part of CO-OP MIAMI, an event organized by Goya Music and Amalgama at The District in Miami's Design District. Crooked Tongues Black

by SummerSeventySix

Ct-Blackmonday

Our friends at Crooked Tongues have tweaked their annual shindig this year to tie-in with their adicolor collaboration. As they have designed a shoe and jacket for the Black series, they've decided to call the bash at Black Monday. Can you see a theme developing? Invites are free, they want people to wear those sombre garments from their moody teenage years. In return, they're promising drinks, lovely ladies and a line-up that includes Black Elvis and The Teens Of Thailand. It takes place on 1 May 2006 and for an invite, email blackmonday (at) crookedtongues (dot) com. The Black Series BK3 shoes are well worth a special launch like this. Featuring Century's with changeable tongues and corresponding laces, you can see some exclusive images, courtesy of Crooked Tongues, after the jump. 5000 pairs will drop on 20 May 2006.

Soil & Pimp Sessions

Gilles Peterson's Worldwide show is always spot on for a bit of inspiration. My ears pricked up when this jazz came on that was tight and tuneful, yet played at dizzyingly frenetic pace. Turns out it was by Soil & "Pimp" Sessions, a six-piece group from Japan who have just released their second long-player, Pimp Of The Year. It looks like it's only available on import outside their homeland, but a quick dig around confirmed my suspicion that they're probably even better live, which is why I write now. The band are in Europe at the moment, and arrive at London's Jazz Café this Sunday, 23 April 2006 for two nights. After that, they head to Amsterdam before coming back to the U.K., and hitting Glasgow, Aberdeen and Sheffield. Go see them pimp their jazz.

Pimp Master, one of their earlier releases, is available as an import at Amazon

Little People: Mickey Mouse Operation

by Ami Kealoha

littlepeople.jpg

Like others schooled in hip-hop who make electronic music, UK-based Little People (aka Laurent Clerc) is like a soundtrack to an operatic cartoon. In fact, Clerc scored films and theater before coming up with the tracks that range from atmospheric and haunting to more bouncy beats and breaks on his debut instrumental album Mickey Mouse Operation, due out 8 May 2006. The upshot is a cinematic journey—complete with bird-like sounds and outer space bleeps—that's well-suited for all-nighters, whether spent working or simply lounging.
