Spothunters: The Fine Art of Real Estate by Wendy Dembo

SPOTHUNTERSlogo.jpg

The residents of Newton, MA, the safest city in the US, are in for a treat. The New Art Center is the host of this unusual show of graffiti artists who use streets, galleries and publishing to get their views across.

Shepard Fairey, Monster Project, Greg Lamarche (designer of the above graphic) and Caleb Neelon are hooking up the art center, housed in a picturesque New England former church.

Shepard Fairey has altered the altar. Monster Project has built a walk-in monster. Greg Lamarche has done a bunch of signs and corrugated obsessive collages. Caleb Neelon is showing his funky and fun seafaring- inspired work. Everyone is making the most of the high ceilings, and God still probably approves.

Runs through 7 April 2006. Opening reception Friday, 10 March 2006, 6-9pm

Shin Tanaka: Kami Zoo
Known for his spot-on paper sneaker replicas, Japanese artist and designer Shin Tanaka has recently been applying his brand of nouveau origami to make animé-like creatures, which will be the subjects of his show Kami Zoo that opens tomorrow 17 August 2006 at Berlin's Less Rain gallery. Like his mock Air Force 1s and Bapestas, characters such as T-Boy (which was inspired by the...
Beautiful Crime
"Graffiti is not vandalism, but a beautiful crime," is one of the philosophical pillars that this guerilla gallery operates on. Now that we seem to have stopped arguing whether graffiti is art, we can start to enjoy some of the fine stuff collected by the folks at Beautiful Crime. The current exhibition by San Francisco artist Pure Evil chronicles how a tale of giant...
Deptford X
This year's conceptual premise of Deptford X, a loose collection of exhibitions and events in and around Deptford in South London, explores how we engage with the temporality of cities, in both real and imagined ways. Running through November 27th, the 7th annual art fest includes exhibits like Turner prize shorlisted artist Simon Starling's "Cracked Teapot (Wagenfeld), 2005" a billboard featuring the classic German...
