Cool Hunting
The residents of Newton, MA, the safest city in the US, are in for a treat. The New Art Center is the host of this unusual show of graffiti artists who use streets, galleries and publishing to get their views across.
Shepard Fairey, Monster Project, Greg Lamarche (designer of the above graphic) and Caleb Neelon are hooking up the art center, housed in a picturesque New England former church.
Shepard Fairey has altered the altar. Monster Project has built a walk-in monster. Greg Lamarche has done a bunch of signs and corrugated obsessive collages. Caleb Neelon is showing his funky and fun seafaring- inspired work. Everyone is making the most of the high ceilings, and God still probably approves.
Runs through 7 April 2006. Opening reception Friday, 10 March 2006, 6-9pm

If you've ever spent anytime in New York's NoLita neighborhood, you may have noticed a giant deserted-looking building on the corner of Elizabeth and Spring. The building stands out because it's covered in ever-changing street art—from good old fashioned graffiti to paper paste-ups and milk crate-based sculptures. For almost 20 years it has been a place for writers to make their mark, as the...
Do you really need a white cube to show art? Is a great painting sitting on a street corner still a great painting? Can someone make something new happen in an art world where everybody has seen everything already? Steve Powers, armed with enough gallery and museum credentials to stuff a resume (he's a graffiti writer, author of The Art Of Getting Over and...
by Tamara Warren Longtime studio mates Crash and Daze join forces for a collaborative show of new work opening this Friday, 15 May 2009, at AdHoc Art in Brooklyn through next month. The exhibition is a juxtaposition of two close knit painters that have forged stellar careers with corresponding trajectories. Both share roots in the New York City transit system subway graffiti movement of...
by Tamara Warren With a discerning eye Carlos “Mare139” Rodriguez deconstructs the kinesthetic of the b-boy in a new series of work on display at the 58 Gallery in New Jersey through this month. (See details below.) The show is a play on contrasts, featuring striking array of stark black-and-white drawings and sharp-edged metallic sculptures that interplay to create a dynamic dialogue. Each piece has...
by Tamara Warren If the best work comes from life experience, then Michel Auder married well. Or at least he married intriguing people—Viva, a Warhol superstar and photographer Cindy Sherman—who added color to his already vibrant life story. The Paris-born artist and filmmaker has done just about everything interesting in the past forty years. To prove it, he kept a diary of his days...
by Ariston Anderson At first glance, the collection of portraits FAS Contemporary's Volta booth appears to be a wall of extremely beautiful women throughout the ages, each one quickly created in delicate strokes of oil paint. But then Monica Lewinsky's face pops out at you and is that Paula Jones? British painter Annie Kevan's solo show features every Presidential girlfriend on record. Although the majority...
