Cool Hunting
Last Friday night, I zipped by BLK/MRKT to visit Rostarr as he was starting to install his solo show that opens this Saturday night. His works were spread out on the floor waiting to be hung, and I could tell that the show was going to be stellar.
For the last year or two, Ro has been working in a new direction that you may not have seen before. He's getting back to basics with his new black and white paintings. His work feels more personal and is looking more analog than digital. You can see the artist’s hand. He's showing the subtlety of the brushstroke.
The work is classic Ro, but it's a bit different. He has a language of forms, so fluid and elemental: Air, Earth and Water. His distinctive, personally inspired vocabulary of Eastern and Middle Eastern calligraphic strokes, beats, and shapes comes alive on the surface of his paintings and drawings.
And don't forget Fire... hot like the man, his art, and definitely this new show in LA; it's not to be missed.
Opening Reception, Saturday, March 18th, 6-10pm.

"Actus Reus" is the debut solo exhibition of Tamara Kostianovsky, an Israeli artist raised in Argentina and currently living in Brooklyn. The show consists of life-sized animal carcasses painstakingly reconstructed using second-hand clothing, which are all former pieces from the artist's actual wardrobe. The patchwork constructions adopt a remarkably grotesque quality, hanging from meat hooks in an antiseptic gallery space. The exhibition's Latin title...
Wangechi Mutu’s new show “Little Touched” at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects is so complete and polished that it feels more like walking into a museum than a gallery. Originally from Kenya, Mutu’s work focuses on the constant exploration and discovery of identity as a woman, immigrant and African in New York City. Known for her lyric collages like “A’gave you” (pictured right), this...
Since bursting onto the scene eight years ago as one of the hottest young photographers in town, Ryan McGinley continues to produce enduring images that focus on the energy and enthusiasm of youth. In his latest show entitled "I Know Where the Summer Goes" (a title taken from an early B-side by Belle and Sebastian), McGinley continues to move from his original casual snapshot-style...

For their premiere show, the new Bongoût Gallery in Berlin presents a show of '80s movie posters from Ghana opening tonight, Wednesday, 6 February 2008. Painted in oil on potato sacks, the paintings feature fantastic renderings of popular films which were shown in public screenings in homes, schools, social clubs and outdoors. Often the work of artists that may have not actually seen the...
Melbourne may well be miles from most of the world's cultural epicenters, but when it comes to appreciation of quality photographic art, Melbournians know their stuff. Perhaps that's why Lumas Editions decided to expand their global galleries by opening a Melbourne tangent just over a month ago. Located in the hip Little Collins Street precinct, Melbourne's Lumas Gallery continues the company's global reputation for...
