Cool Hunting
A+R is a newly opened design shop by Andy Griffith, a former film editor and partner Rose Apodaca, previously the L.A. bureau chief of WWD. While searching for a restaurant space in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles they stumbled upon a vacant storefront—too small for an actual restaurant, they decided instead to open an "international lifestyle design" store. The raw space let the pair design to their taste, including custom fixtures.
Andy and Rose (A+R) have scoured the globe for all things odd, useful and decorative creating a well edited, modern eccentric shop. Many of the products are locally exclusive (some are even U.S. exclusives). The work of young artists mingles with that of fledgling designers, including everything from molded ceramics and one of a kind stuffed toys to resin belt buckles and author-signed books.
More pics and details after the jump.
Some of the most interesting items come from a Czech Republic design company called Qubus. One standout is this ceramic vase, a perfect replica of a Wellington boot, right down to the ridges along the sole. An original solution for flowers or as a sculptural artifact. Other utilitarian designs by the firm include drinking glasses/vases. One is made from a mold of the bottom of a 1 litre Coca-Cola bottle and the other is a whimsical glass made to look like a plastic cup, a not-so-subtle testimony of the need for recycling.
For the child in you (or your child) there is a line of stuffed animals from German designer Andreas Linzner. The toys' fanciful fabrics come from antique terry cloth towels that are found from his travels around the world and include a floppy eared elephant and a monkey. These are one of a kind pieces because his designs are always changing in size, shape and material. Custom animals are available upon request.

The latest from the Los-Angeles-based label I Heart Guts (covered over in Spear-land earlier this month) is "Don't Lose Your Lunch" (baby style pictured). Like the rest of the I Heart Guts line (the brainchild of a designer/former teacher with a penchant for Japanese pop art), this tee anthropomorphizes organs and pairs them with puns in both English and Japanese. The upshot is a...

Eight collaborators were tasked with putting their own design mark on the simple shapes made from single sheets of aluminum. The diverse line-up of creatives...
Since we first heard about L.A.-based artist and designer Steven Harrington's work, he's apparently been busy. Some of his latest illustration recently reached my desk in the form of a beautiful holiday calendar from Daub and Bauble. Created at the Studio on Fire letterpress, Harrington's design features a proud peacock with Day of the Dead-style skulls. (Pictured above right.)Harrington, along with fellow artist Justin...
The International Cut and Paste Digital Design Tournament which kicked off on 8 September has been hosting live design events in various U.S. and European cities over the last couple of months with an Asian and Australian leg of the competition still to come. Watching Cut and Paste grow from their start in NYC, we're happily impressed to see of how far they've come...
I don't smoke, but if I did, I would use one of these new Superflat Ninja Ashtrays (above left). A collaboration with Mexico City's hip houseware brand DFC, Yoko Devereaux expands beyond the tailored knitwear the label's known for to add some well-designed home furnishings. Also included in the collection is the Cabron Bottle Opener (below), a solid brass bottle opener featuring a brass...
Our friends at Kiosk have just introduced their fifth and latest collection, this time sourced from the far reaches of Finland. Like always, the Kiosk team traveled abroad to find the best everyday classics. The collection features a lot of bold retro designs and items worth it just for packaging that references both '60s graphics and Finnish folk patterns, like a simple carton of...
