Nullsleep by Josh Rubin
Nullsleep makes music on Gameboys. Exclusively. And it's really good. He performed recently at Monkeytown in Brooklyn, NY and the m ss ng p eces was there to capture it for CH Video. His interview, and excerpts from his performance, comprise the first in our series '8-bit' which is about making music on low-fi gadgets.

8-Bit v5: Overview
In the last volume of our 8-bit series we discuss the sampling processes of artists who re-imagine the possibilities of lo-fi technology with New Media Curator, Ashley Colgate. We revisit Mike Rosenthal, Experimental Music Curator at the NYC performance space 'The Tank.' We also had the opportunity to speak with Montgomery Knott director of MonkeytownHQ, the innovative dining and performance space in Williamsburg. We asked them about their ideas on 8-bit music and the artistic process of manipulating limited technology as a form of expression. What follows is an overview on the future of the Chiptune sound.

8-Bit v4: Mark Denardo
For our final 8 bit artist profile, Cool Hunting Video presents Mark Denardo, a musician that incorporates electronic sequences from both his Gameboy and PSP into deeply soulful and original folk songs. Referred to in a Wired Magazine article by Malcolm McLaren as the “...next step in the evolution of rock n’ roll.” Denardo renders cryptic lo-fi compositions that blend hypnotically with his calculated use of guitar, violin and piano. This profile focuses on Mark’s album ‘Doppleganger’ his unique musical style and his recent sound track work for the ‘Gamma Bros’ video game.

Nouvelle Vague: Nugroove vol. 5
With bossa nova-kissed covers of vintage new wave, lilting French accents and sweetly soothing vocals, Nouvelle Vague's eponymous debut in 2004 was a global hit, providing the perfect soundtrack for romantic first dates. Currently touring with their equally charming and catchy second release, Bande à Part, Cool Hunting joined singers Mélanie Pain and Phoebe Killdeer, producer Olivier Libaux and accordionist Wendy McNeill for a few games of bowling before catching their New York performance at Webster Hall. In the video you'll see their flirty live show, find out who's the best bowler in the group and learn what some of their songs are really about.

In this, our 50th episode, we visit the Catskill, NY studio of artist Brian Dewan. His sculptures are pre-digital, unpredictable electronic musical instruments. Dewanatron, as he calls the genre, is a family of instruments which hazard unpredictable behaviors and self playing tendencies. They make all previous and future instruments obsolete. We also bring you to Pierogi Gallery where we first learned about Dewan.

Crossing multiple genres, representing a mutli-culti mix of ethnicities and with lyrics in five different languages, the New York-based band resists easy definition. Since last October, Cool Hunting Video has followed the quartet to the studio, caught live shows, and visited backstage, capturing candid, behind-the-scenes moments with the burgeoning group. The resulting video is a portrait of a band that's as eclectic as the musicians themselves. Like always, but especially for this installment, headphone use is recommended.
