Hester Street Collaborative: Bad Design Darts

by Ami Kealoha

hesterstreetcollaborative.jpg

Hester Street Collaborative, the non-profit devoted to improving NYC's physical places and spaces through community participation, has been coming up with innovative solutions to urban problems since 1997 when it was founded by the architecture firm Leroy Street Studio. Some of their approaches, including "Bad Design Darts," a game that targets unsuccessful elements of design and "Step on Your Neighborhood Pavers," neighborhood-specific imprinted concrete blocks, are the focus of an exhibit at The Municipal Art Society that's up now and runs through 19 April 2006. An opening reception happens tomorrow, 22 February 2006, from 6-8pm. RSVP by emailing rsvp [at] mas [dot] org or calling 212-935-2075.

Pom Teas

by Evan Orensten

pomteas.jpg

I met my friendly local Pom delivery man at the market this morning and he introduced me to these new Pom Teas. Currently available in Pomegranate Black Tea and Pomegranate Lychee Green Tea (the better of the two), they come in glass containers that you can reuse as glassware (if you don't mind the Pom Tea logo on them). Not a bargain at $3, but if you like pomegranate you'll enjoy these. The delivery man said these have been out a week or two and will ramp up in time for spring/summer 2006. We couldn't find any other information on Pom's site, so keep an eye out for these at your local market.

Exit Music Songs With Radio Heads

by SummerSeventySix

exitmusic.jpg

Cover versions that actually work are few and far between, but this one has been getting played in all the right places. It's a version of Radiohead's "Just" by NYC DJ Mark Ronson, and Phantom Planet singer Alex Greenwald, the man responsible for singing the theme song to The OC.

While the first few bars are fairly unremarkable, it's when the horns and drums kick in that you realize what the fuss is about. Ronson's been dropping it into his sets on his East Village Radio show, Authentic Shit, and the only online place you can currently hear the full tune (legally) is at his myspace page. Next month though, it will feature on an album of Radiohead covers released by exemplary British label BBE. With the likes of The Cinematic Orchestra, RJD2 and Matthew Herbert contributing to Exit Music Songs With Radio Heads, it should be worth investigation.

We found a track list here. We're not sure if we got the right cover image (above). If you can confirm/deny let us know.

Update 20 March 2006: Thanks for all of your feedback. We did get the cover image right. We also just learned about the song's video from CH reader Dan. Apparently it's by The Motion Group/Abbey Road Video Services and features various animated graffiti characters, including some by Invader, doing all sorts of things on London's blank spaces. In particular, the horn-players performing on the back of a lorry as it drives through the city are incredible. Check out the video here.

Skull ties from J.Press

by Evan Orensten

jpressskulls.jpg

J.Press can always be relied on for its preppy classics. Their Skull & Bones ($55.50) and Skull and Paisley ($72.50) ties caught our eye. Going black tie? The Skull and Bones bow tie ($29.50) suits us fine.

Also on CH: Fancy Pants Punk

Thanks Jeff and Brian
