emoticon : - danwade
by Evan Orensten
Animated gif: B-) (Be Cool)
danwade's new work, emoticon riffs on the personal and emotional aspects of our daily digital expression, where we've resorted to using a series of grammatical elements to communicate how we feel to others.
emoticon explores how danwade has brought these ideograms to life by creating still, animated, print and flash versions of himself; each image is his literal interpretation of the symbol. His 'personally branded" emoticons are clever and raise interesting questions about identity, emotion and non-verbal communication.
More on danwade here.
Aiko Trittico
by Carol T Chung
I'm glad to see that it looks like Niko Stumpo, the founder of Hanazuki. The shop not only sells self produced products from Aiko, but also other friends and acquaintances who practice the same method of production. Featured above are three friends known as Trittico. There's something slightly insidious about red penguins with beady eyes.
Flat Table by Flo Design
by Evan Orensten
Flo Design's Flat Table was inspired by synesthesia (a sense of "seeing" a color when hearing a sound, for example). The table top has an LED light source which shifts colors based on environmental changes. Eri Nagashima is the designer behind Milan-based Flo Design.
Featured at the Cologne International Furniture Fair at the Design Spotter booth.
Design for Africa
by Evan Orensten
"Design is much more than nice shapes, packages or expensive "designer products." We want to show that design is a method, which works even in very poor parts of the world."
Design for Africa is an ambitious project of two recent industrial design school graduates, Frank Hofmann and Staffan Weigel. They have just begun a year-long journey to bring their expertise to helping communities throughout Africa solve some of the problems of everyday life. The trip culminates in a project focused on recycling programs in Kibera, a Nairobi slum. Their inspiring work will be documented on their site.
