Cool Hunting
Kicking-off its fifth year, Yoko Devereaux, the Brooklyn-based downtown-slash-uptown men's fashion line, just opened its very own outpost, the first in the world to carry the complete YD collection. Located in Williamsburg's burgeoning South Side, the boutique will also offer H. Frederickson for women, jewelry by In God We Trust (another Williamsburg-based designer), and Cumming, actor Alan Cumming's line of bath and body products. An eclectic interior featuring an illuminated wall of past designs, vintage wallpaper, metal, wood, and exposed brick, along with planned photography exhibits and book signings, sets the stage for a new South Williamsburg destination.

Christine J. Brandt's shapely oversized rings and necklace pendants put her right in line with current cutting-edge jewelry designers, but her use of nature, both for raw materials and inspiration, sets her apart beautifully. Creating her pieces from a log cabin in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, Brandt fashions her jewelry from exotic woods, raw crystals, and stones, each piece hand-carved and finished with natural oils...
Boston-area metalsmith and jewelry designer Leslie Shershow finds inspiration in topics as disparate as found objects, stuffed animals, and the exploitation of nature by humans. Despite the wide array of subject matter, her collections share a refined ruggedness and a rough-hewn beauty. Our favorite collection is her Alaska Series, with its antlers, rifles, bear heads and horns. Selections from the Alaska Series have recently...
Studios can often act as hubs for creativity, but what happens when you share a small space with four equally creative and artistic people? CH spent a day at the shared Sydney studio space of fashion designer Kate Hurst, jewelery designer Elke Kramer, filmmaker Fiona McGee and Matt Weston, also a jewelry designer, spying on the daily activities of some of Australia's most successful...
The second season of The Countdown, Refinery29's video series featuring profiles on important names in fashion, premiered yesterday 22 January 2008 in collaboration with MySpace Fashion. The series visits five influential independent designers in their studios as they prepare for New York Fashion Week 2008. The first episode's subject is none other than Thom Browne and includes an interview with the designer as he prepares...
by Pamela LiouHere's a thought: Every single designer in the fashion pantheon started out as a precocious newbie bent on mixing things up. With a little moxy and lots of talent, they built ironclad legacies, but established as they may be, they can't keep a stranglehold on the industry forever. Each year there are more and more lines—some good, but most…not—jumping into the ring....
Neon plastic lanyard evokes a summer camp nostalgia when counselors schooled us in the art of kitsch key-chains and friendship bracelets. But in the hands of Philip O'Sullivan, the designer of an innovative new jewelry line, these notions of yesteryear are all but a memory. Made from hiking rope, which is crafted into beautifully intricate knots and finished with gunmetal hardware, each piece is...
