Cool Hunting
Upper Playground produces some of the most creative and attractive print clothing and accessories of just about anything coming out of Northern California these days. While much of their gear is stamped with imagery from their San Francisco Bay Area roots, that would be too simple of a description. No need to waste ink (or whatever these words are written with); rather, see for yourself as UP has built a stylish and full-featured online store. There's also a guide to retail stores that carry their designs across the country — we counted nine in Manhattan and two in Brooklyn alone.
For our SoCal readers, UP's SF-based sister gallery FIFTY24SF will be curating an artshow titled "Junta" in scenic Culver City. Junta will feature artists from both the North and South American continents. And it's coming up soon: this Saturday 28 January through 12 February at the Scion Space.
The Junta show will feature the works of: Vitche (image after the jump), Juan Angel Chavez (installation shot pictured above), Basco, Elisita Balbontin, Charles Glaubitz, Dr. Lakra, Raza Uno, Masa, Eduardo Recife, Estevan Oriol, Mister Cartoon and Rob Abeyta Jr.; a mix of the established with some up-and-coming talents.

Set to drop next week, toy designer Mad (known for his block-head figures for My Plastic Heart) is the artist behind the first edition from a new line of tees called Socialpest. The premiere design (pictured here) hints at a Sharpie theme, an ongoing thread in Mad's work. Printed in high-mesh (more supple) gold ink on a soft yet durable blend of hemp and...
be+cause, a new socially conscious clothing line started by Tibetan Freedom Concert co-founders Erin and Deyden (who also run c3 lab), launches today with a special edition t-shirt line designed by artists Asif Mian, David Ellis, Kiku Yamaguchi, and Yuri Shimojo, all members of the Barnstormer collective. Called "Hero 1," the three designs depict figures from contemporary history. Shimojo, who last month helped us...
Looking for something special that all the other hipsters out there don't have? Well then, if you're out in San Francisco and tired of hitting up those other tried and true designer toy shops, then head over to Double Punch in North Beach for a more eclectic hand picked assortment of goodies. The store also features a gallery space which is currently hosting the...
Fashion label Nice Collective was started by self-described "nice guys" Joe Haller and Ian Hannula shortly after the two met at a club in San Francisco in 1995. Inspired by music, art, technology, performance, reptiles and spiders, science, Ian's military experience and the San Francisco scene, the two set out to create experiences for themselves and their friends. Clothing quickly materialized as a core...
Witty and modern, these latest editions from Projects Watches continue the brand's reputation of making affordable accessories with high design pedigrees. Since 1992, the Michael Graves-founded outfit has been producing timepieces by the likes of Richard Meier, Maya Lin and Cesar Pelli. The Twilight watch, which illustrates the fading light cycle every 20 seconds, comes courtesy of web typography guru Daniel Will-Harris. Using two...
Free Bird is a handmade line of customized military boots applying recycling to fashion in a new way. Created by young New York-based designer, Stacey Howard, the boots were originally collected from military bases in the South. As Howard says, "It felt most natural to my aesthetic to use vintage native American garments and paint to refabricate the boots. Using a soldier's boot and...
