Cool Hunting
In the comic books, superheroes-in-disguise Clark Kent and Peter Parker answered to editors Perry White and J. Jonah Jameson. But what did these two captains of industry have in common besides being press barons with superheroes on their payroll? They ran their respective empires from the comfort of a grandiose executive chair. And now you can too. Dutchman Marijn van der Poll's design firm, North Industries, has unveiled the ultimate chair for the work-a-day office superhero. Through van der Poll's brilliant design, anyone from cubicle dwellers to boardroom lions, can command instant respect as this single piece of essential office furniture. Something as simple and necessary as an office chair transforms any deskbound suit into: Chairman. Van der Poll says he draws inspiration for the design from his comic book heroes. "I figured I'd try and give today's CEO the ultimate corporate seating object with special powers," he told Cool Hunting from his secret below sealevel lair known as Holland. Kidding aside, this is no ordinary chair. Because ordinary chairs don't levitate. But "Chairman" does. With the flick of a switch, the turbines in "Chairman" produce a thin cushion of air, reducing the friction between the sitter and the ground, virtually nil. What does this mean? It means that this two hundred pound throne can be pushed around the boardroom with the touch of a finger. Though with "Chairman" you'll rarely find yourself being pushed around.

By Paolo Ferrarini of Future Concept Lab In Milan it's unusual to find "non-Milanese” design, meaning design that's not linear, clean or somehow a reinterpretation of classic pieces and brands. Decidedly untraditional, Wozzup Mutazionidinterni is the refreshing exception to this rule. Former set designer Luca Porcelli and Maurizio Duranti, an ex-graphic designer, founded Wozzup in 2007. They work and exhibit their furniture, paintings and objects...

Formed in 2004, the group of designers (and friends) Doha Chebib, Carmen Douville, Dara Humniski and Anna Thomas, who all met while attending the University of Alberta for Industrial Design. The four designers work collaboratively and individually, each...
Parkhaus, the Berlin-based producer of felt accessories, stumbled upon a winning concept with its Suit for 100 Classics, an expanding collection of custom felt seat pads for iconic chairs. Arguably, a well-thought design doesn't need any augmentations. However, it's a sad fact that some of the most iconic chairs from the past century can be uncomfortable. Take the designs pictured, pads for which are...
The second offering from the concept furniture line Skate Study House, made 100% of throwaway materials, including excess skateboard cutouts of laminated wood, is an homage to waste. Created by Pierre Andre Senizergues in collaboration with designer Gil Le Bon De LaPointe, the Skate Study House collection is a modern-day takes its inspiration from the famous Los Angeles-based Case Study House project that debuted...
Produced deep in the forests of Sweden, "Cap" is the first piece of furniture from the Don't Feed The Swedes. The plastic stool is a tribute to prominent graffiti personalities and modeled after a standard spray can nozzle, but enlarged to a scale which also makes for a functional seat. It was thought up by Swedish design duo Don't Feed The Swedes, and will...
Much like their wildly successful diffusion lines with fashion designers, Target's new line with Dror Benshetrit signals a willingness to take on smaller industrial designers than they have previously and package them for the masses. Of the upcoming collection of bedding, furniture and stationery, all designed with small spaces in mind, we think the Stack bookcase ($90, due out later this month) is the...
