Charlie White: Everything is American

by Ami Kealoha

everythingisamerican1.jpg everythingisamerican2.jpg

"Everything is American," photographer Charlie White's first solo show in nearly three years, opens this Friday, 13 January, at Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York. White's latest subjects, like the Tate-LaBianca murder trial, gymnastics, and early man, are cultural touchstones that capture the popular imagination and inspire controversy. Created with elaborately-staged sets and lighting design, his work is about the horror and pathos of history and current events; in part, a comment on how popular mediums like film and television communicate these collective stories. The dramas as envisioned by White's unflinching gaze make for unsettling results: a young gymnast open-mouthed in her coach's arms, a human-like creature with gore in his hand and at his feet (Homo Habilis, pictured above left), and a courtroom crowd foregrounded by three women with shaved heads (Tate-LaBianca, above right). Honest and ambiguous—Is she yelling or moaning? Are the entrails human or animal?—the effect is neither drained of emotion nor overtly manipulative.

Through 18 February 2006 at Andrea Rosen Gallery, 525 West 24th Street (opening reception: 13 January, 6 - 8 pm and running concurrently at f a projects in London through 25 February 2006.

Skullcandy Guitar Bag

by Josh Rubin

Skullcandy-Guitarbag1 Skullcandy-Guitarbag2

Tucked in a corner at CES last week was Skullcandy, a manufacturer of headphones and other music listening devices. They have a series of backpacks, called Link, that feature amplified speakers and music player controls in the shoulder straps—these features aren't novel, but the price and design are great. The latest addition to their backpack line is this guitar bag, a seemingly appropriate product extension for musicians on-the-go.

RE:UP Magazine Manual #009

by Mike Reger

reup-thumb.gif

RE:UP Magazine, my absolute favorite music and design quarterly, just released "Manual #009 - The North Sea Rockers Edition." Every full-color issue explores a visual/musical theme and exposes several hot up-and-coming designers and artists through playful full-page spreads and inventive layouts on uncoated heavy paper stock in an oversized square format. The music covered invariably forms my personal soundtrack for months to come.

This edition spotlights "musicians and producers who are steady rocking it in and around the North Sea." The cover article is an in-depth exclusive: The first and only published US interview with the elusive Boards of Canada (written by my friend Steve Marchese over at scissorkick). They discuss remixing Beck's "Broken Drum," the state of electronic music today, Stevie Wonder, and God. Other features include Annie, Nicolay, Blackalicious, and Gilles Peterson.

Low Tee Bathing Suits

by Evan Orensten

lowtee.jpg

Low Tee makes men's bathing suits from vintage t-shirts (props for recycling). The suits are fully lined in Lycra, and have elastic around the legs and waist, which also has a drawstring. Because the suits are made from vintage t-shirts they are all one-of-a-kind (which we also like). And if you ask nicely you could probably send in one of your own shirts to be converted into a suit. Suits are well-priced at $45 and available online.

Thanks, Rob.

Glitch Browser

by Josh Rubin

Glitchbrowser-Ch

Glitch Browser is a project by Dimitre Lima, Tony Scott and Iman Moradi that is designed to subvert the usual course of conformity and signal perfection. You enter a URL in to the browser and the site returned has intentionally degraded images. The beautiful distortion is created by dropping and rearranging the data packets created in the transmission of the image.

Thanks, Ari.
