Nominations for the 6th annual Bloggies began today and, well, Cool Hunting's a blog! Obviously, we fit the American, Group, and, ahem, Best of the Year, among others, but our just-launched Cool Hunting Podcast is already rated #13 in Arts and Entertainment at iTunes and makes us happy to be a contender in that category as well.

Essence: Vitamin Enriched Underwear from Aussiebum

by Evan Orensten

Aussiebum, an Australian underwear company, has just introduced their newest line of underwear, called Essence. The underwear is made from microfibre, which is treated with acerola (a fruit high in vitamin c and antioxidents) and other "organic substances." These ingredients remain active for 15 washes, and can be "reactivated." What's fascinating about this technology are other potential enrichments: Think caffeine, nicotine (or the opposite, the new patch), Viagra...the possibilities are endless...

This Week in Needled

by Ami Kealoha

thisweekinneedled1.06.jpg

This week in Needled started with a look at tattoo conventions with the expert Bob Baxter, editor of Skin & Ink magazine. Marisa also picks her favorite upcoming convention: this February's Milan, Italy show. Tuesday took a look at a tattoo artist to the stars who takes a spiritual approach to the art, Roni Zulu. Wednesday was all about tattoos and tassles with the Rock-n-Roll Burlesque Review in Las Vegas. In a different vein, a photo essay on The Tattooing Monks of Wat Bang Phro was the focus on Thursday, while Friday is time for jewelry and linen shopping.

Royal Jelly Ontour

by Ami Kealoha

RoyalJellyOntour.jpg

Ontour, the Storybook-based t-shirt line out of Holland, tells the tale of a girl who loved jelly pudding so much that she turned into a jellyfish in their latest spring/summer 2006 collection. Due out in February, the fanciful idea yielded a series of tees in mostly greens, grays, and pinks. Standouts include "Jelly Invasion," a speckled pattern that mixes silhouetted jellyfish and jelly puddings and "Jellyskull," an image that superimposes a trumpet from Ontour's first line over a jellyfish to add a twist to the current skull craze. Check it out after the jump.

Available in select stores in Europe and online from Fresh Cotton

Hanspree Televisions

by Josh Rubin

One of the things that's struck our eye here at CES in Las Vegas are these fun and inexpensive television sets from Hanspree. They come in dozens of shapes and styles for kids, sports fans and design freaks and are well priced. While the occasional character or sports team set is not new, we like that Hanspree is producing a whole range of televisions that let consumers express themselves. Available in many styles and sizes online from $299+.

McSweeneys' media empire continues to expand, this time into the world of moving pictures with the launch of Wholphin, a quarterly DVD magazine. Named after the offspring of a Whale and a Dolphin, the premiere issue's bold-type lineup includes an Al Gore profile by Spike Jones, Miranda July and Miguel Arteta's pre-You And Me and Everyone We Know short, called Are You the Favorite Person of Anybody?, and includes friend-of-McSweeney's David Byrne.

Included with the current issues of The Believer and McSweeney's 18, you can also pick up a 5-issue subscription for $40 from the McSweeney's store.

To Darrin Hudson, From Jeff Staple

by Josh Rubin

Jeffstaple Complex

Jeff Staple is the creative force behind Staple Design and The Reed Space, both of which marry urban culture and fantastic design. One of his strongest focal points is footwear, Sneakers specifically. On his new blog, To Darrin Hudson, Jeff is cataloging (and selling) his shoe collection one-by-one-- not just for the sake of doing it, but also as the ultimate one-up to his high school rival sneaker collector, Darrin Hudson. Interspersed with posts of pairs, Jeff ponders other stuff as well:

Sometimes, people ask me why I even bother to buy kicks since its obvious I can get them for free. While I truly appreciate the free gifts from everyone, at the heart of it, I'm still a fan. And I like to support things I'm into. There's a certain satisfaction in hunting, looking for and then buying something you really have your eye on. It's the addict in me talking I guess. When you get something for free from someone, it's a different sort of satisfaction. You appreciate what you got but more so, you appreciate the relationship that lies behind the gift. When you go and buy something, it's a satisfaction that is completely innate and carnal...
1. WANT. 2. NEED. 3. ACQUIRE. Never lose sight of what makes you happy.

Well said. I can totally relate.
