AfterModern: Out of Doors by Ami Kealoha
AfterModern, a new gallery in San Francisco's up-and-coming South Park neighborhood (conveniently nearby the SFMOMA) launched with an inaugural exhibition last Saturday called "Out of Doors." Curated by Busy Being founder Amber Abramson, 27, who formerly headed up Los Angeles gallery and store, four x four, the show takes the outdoors as its theme. A line-up of mostly California-based artists, such as HunterGatherer, Deanne Cheuk, and Kozyndan, bring their pastoral works to the space through January 28th.

Beautiful Crime
"Graffiti is not vandalism, but a beautiful crime," is one of the philosophical pillars that this guerilla gallery operates on. Now that we seem to have stopped arguing whether graffiti is art, we can start to enjoy some of the fine stuff collected by the folks at Beautiful Crime. The current exhibition by San Francisco artist Pure Evil chronicles how a tale of giant...

The Hoody Gallery
Now that the hoody's been elevated to avant-couture, it follows that there's an exhibition devoted to the ubiquitous item of clothing. Featuring works by local Bay Area designers, such as Nicacelly (pictured), Uhu Clothing and Like Minded People, The Hoody Gallery is a group show of limited-edition hoodies that have been silkscreened, re-invented and otherwise tricked-out. The one-night event also features a line-up of...

Catharine Clark Gallery Photo Exhibit
Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco started 2007 with a photo exhibit that opened yesterday, featuring the works of Aaron Plant (U.S), Ruud van Empel (The Netherlands), Ellen Kooi (The Netherlands), and Carlos and Jason Sanchez (Canada). All of the artists share an affinity for subverted imagery of childhood, though their approaches vary wildly. The exhibit makes for a somewhat eerie but fascinating compilation...

Cosmic Wonder
The opening of the group show Cosmic Wonder this coming Friday, 14 July 2006, at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco signals the death (or latest high watermark depending on how you look at it) of second-wave psychedelia that's flooded contemporary art in recent years. Including pieces by king and queen of the movement, fellow RISD and Fort Thunder alums...
