The Single Cookie Jar by Emilie Baltz by Evan Orensten
Emilie Baltz is a Brooklyn-based photographer and designer. She started designing objects that were inspired by her work as a photographer to "reflect surrounding cultural needs." The Single Cookie Jar is both a cookie cutter and a chic cookie storage container. The "dinner for one" and the pre-portioned snacks craze are possible influences for this clever design. It's handcast in ceramic and available in red, white or blue. Available by special order for $250 direct from the artist. Check out Emelie's blog and her photography site. Sovereign Beck Ties
The creation of longtime collaborators Ryan Sovereign and William Beck, since 2005 this fledging Brooklyn-based creator of silk ties has injected some fashion and style in the oft-staid accessory that is the neck-tie. Graduates of RISD and Industrial Design & Sculpture, these two young designers have crafted a neck tie that the wearer feels like he's getting away with something when he dons. Two...

Colette Fisheye
Viennese purveyors of photo-artistry, Lomo, have teamed up with Parisian concept shop pioneers, Colette, to make a black version of Lomo's Fisheye camera featuring Colette's doggy mascots, Caperino and Peperone, on the back. The convex lens means a 170-degree field of view that creates distorted pictures using standard 35mm film. The Colette version, available for $65 exclusively from Colette and Lomo, comes with the...

The Architect's Bird Feeder
Designed by architect Doug Patt (he's also one half of bi-coastal firm Rootphi), the Architect's Birdfeeder is made of eight interlocking polycarbonate (think bulletproof glass) pieces. Like Rootphi's Flat Pack housing, the structural elements ship flat and require no tools or fasteners for assembly. The upshot is product that's fun to put together, easy to refill and clean and eco-friendly. It also looks like a...

Mast Brothers Chocolate
Walking by Williamburg's crafty flea market Artists & Fleas last weekend, I spied stacks of chocolate bars wrapped in patterned papers. Stepping inside, I met Rick and Michael Mast, the brother duo who recently started Mast Brothers Chocolate, their line of artisinal chocolates. As former room mates, the pair spent many an hour dreaming up flavor combinations until they finally scraped up enough cash...

Alessi Spring/Summer 2008
Alessi's upcoming Spring/Summer 2008 product line builds on their reputation for smartly-designed kitchenware. This season, the Italian company employed the talents of a handful of celebrated designers to create some interesting twists on standard fare. One example is the sleekly egg-shaped “Pop-Up” bottle cap opener, which is work of Milanese designer Giovanni Alessi Anghini. The pressure-operated mechanism removes the bottle cap in one downward...
