Cool Hunting
Cold Cut's Matt Black and Jonathan More should need no introduction. Anyone who remembers their classic remix of Eric B + Rakim's "Paid In Full" or their rendition of "Autumn Leaves" that epitomized the early downtempo sound of the 90's probably knows these guys as the stealth duo behind the UK's preeminent avantgarde record label Ninjatune.
Their nearly 20 year collaboration has included many ground-breaking releases as Cold Cut as well as the founding of three amazing record labels: Ninjatune, Big Dada and NuTone. They also invented the interactive video mixing software VJamm, run the ever-popular Solid Steel Radio show on BBC (originally on KISS FM), and along the way garnered numerous awards and praise as radical pioneers of their artforms.
What you might not know is that they just dropped a bombastic new single featuring guitar and vocals from John Spencer (as in the "John Spencer Blues Explosion") and Mike Ladd as a prelude to what I imagine to be another mind blowing album, "Sound Mirrors." The 12" features remixes by The Underdog, DJ Kentaro, a Solid Steel dub and an accapella for all you mash-up DJs out there. The CD will follow soon with even more versions.
The video for the song and more is up on their newly relaunched website and it's right on time for the season of being thankful (if you dont live in a war zone).

Dave 1 (aka Dave Macklovitch) has been busy as hell of late. In addition to being a prolific hip-hop producer, the Montreal native has been pulling duty as Vice magazine's rap editor and is about to release a second album for Chromeo, the cheeky synth-funk outfit he created with his high school friend, Pee Thug (Patrick Gemayel). He's also working on his thesis in...
"Savoir Faire is everywhere!" Ever since I first met this very unassuming maestro back in 1999 at DC's infamous Eighteenth Street Lounge, I've always been impressed with the high contrast between Alex Gimeno's mild-mannered in person demeanor and his jet set persona "Ursula 1000," a name that is defined by swift navigation of stylistic currents, savvy sense of humor (in song titles, art work...
You know the feeling you get when you throw a DJ mix on your portable device for the first time and on your way out the door—even before you've adjusted the headset and locked the door behind you—you know you've got the perfect soundtrack to rock out and paint the town infrared? I've had FabricLive: The Herbaliser on infinite loop on my iPod for...
It's a gender battle between New York-based DJs Syrup Girls and Drop the Lime on this grime-heavy latest in the Shotgun Wedding series put out by Violent Turd, a sublabel of Tigerbeat6. Both vets of drum & bass scenes, Drop the Lime and the Syrup duo face-off on two tracks. Drop the Lime's three-turntable feat relentlessly mixes old school jungle, crunk, dubstep, and hip-hop,...
Following the stunning "Remixes 1997-2000," the eclectic album of originals "In Between," "In Between Remixed" and the dancefloor approved dj mix "Mixing," the Berlin-based six-member collective Jazzanova presents "The Remixes 2002-2005," a compilation of released, unreleased and brand new—if you haven't guessed it—remixes. Though shorter in number of tracks by far to the original "Remixes" collection, this new edition does not skimp on quality....
If you happened to catch Cool Hunting in the right moment a few weeks back you saw that we were running a Gorrilaz mash-up contest. Unfortunately we were asked to take the contest down after a day, but that didn't stop a bunch of readers from submitting entries. The good news is that we're still giving away the custom skate deck designed by Gorillaz...
