CH Holiday 2005 Gift Guide
by Josh Rubin
Last year we launched our first holiday gift guide. Those of you who have been with us for a while will remember that we asked you to pay for it. That was an interesting experiment, but we like free content so this year we decided not to charge you to get the guide. And this year it's even better!
We've got a few great exclusives. We've searched for the new and noteworthy. Added a few classics. And revisited some of our favorite gift ideas from the site. Almost everything is available online to make your holiday shopping as painless as possible. Check it out now and check back often as the guide will be updated daily.
Charles and Marie: Soupe Du Jour
by Josh Rubin
We don't know Charles and Marie personally, but judging by their site I think we'd all have plenty to talk about. In addition to their series of blogs, they have just launched Soupe Du Jour-- an on-line shop with something new every day and only available that day. Today there's a mystical keychain from Brazil, tomorrow the sexiest toothbrush on earth and Wednesday an odd little piggy bank hammer. That's all we know because they only give 2 days worth of previews. I've heard, however, that they have some really good stuff coming up in December.
Vans Vault, Spring 06
by Josh Rubin
Brighton based One40Five Store has posted a preview of the Spring 06 Vault Line from Vans. For those not familiar with this line, it's a higher quality construction with limited distribution. The bright patterns here are just one of the many directions coming this Spring. There will also be Wallys, plaids, bright leather perforateds, camo printed tweed and moccasins that look like they might be a Visvim collaboration (purely my own speculation here). Anyway, the later two are quite exciting and are pictured after the jump, but all the pics can be found here.
Cold Cut - Everything Is Under Control
by Mike Reger
Cold Cut's Matt Black and Jonathan More should need no introduction. Anyone who remembers their classic remix of Eric B + Rakim's "Paid In Full" or their rendition of "Autumn Leaves" that epitomized the early downtempo sound of the 90's probably knows these guys as the stealth duo behind the UK's preeminent avantgarde record label Ninjatune.
Their nearly 20 year collaboration has included many ground-breaking releases as Cold Cut as well as the founding of three amazing record labels: Ninjatune, Big Dada and NuTone. They also invented the interactive video mixing software VJamm, run the ever-popular Solid Steel Radio show on BBC (originally on KISS FM), and along the way garnered numerous awards and praise as radical pioneers of their artforms.
What you might not know is that they just dropped a bombastic new single featuring guitar and vocals from John Spencer (as in the "John Spencer Blues Explosion") and Mike Ladd as a prelude to what I imagine to be another mind blowing album, "Sound Mirrors." The 12" features remixes by The Underdog, DJ Kentaro, a Solid Steel dub and an accapella for all you mash-up DJs out there. The CD will follow soon with even more versions.
The video for the song and more is up on their newly relaunched website and it's right on time for the season of being thankful (if you dont live in a war zone).
