Magic Bean Word Sprout

by Josh Rubin

Word-Sprout-Magic-Bean

The Magic Bean is a little sprouting plant that has a message. In this case it's "I Love You," but if you're willing to buy 5,000 or more you can have any message you want on the plant and any design on the can. For those in to the plant-in-a-can thing, there's also a line of Flower Cans. Fascinating.

Deptford X

by Ami Kealoha

deptfordx.jpg

This year's conceptual premise of Deptford X, a loose collection of exhibitions and events in and around Deptford in South London, explores how we engage with the temporality of cities, in both real and imagined ways. Running through November 27th, the 7th annual art fest includes exhibits like Turner prize shorlisted artist Simon Starling's "Cracked Teapot (Wagenfeld), 2005" a billboard featuring the classic German glass teapot, Luke Oxley's neon light-reconfiguration of a warning sign to criminals, and the sci-fi, Lego-like renderings of Plug-In City by Alain Bublex. The Open Exhibition features work by artists living and working in South London, like Andrea Gregson's creepy quilted installation (pictured above). Until November 6th, the Berliner art collective Pankof Bank will host a Supper-Market, hosting six-person invite-only dinner parties in the streets of Deptford.

S-Wert Designs

by Ami Kealoha

s-wertdesign.jpg

Berlin-based S-Wert Design is a "critical homage" to the city, calling attention to gems of Berlin architecture and the way it's evolved - or hasn't evolved - in recent decades. Their wrapping paper series is an assortment of four designs, each one devoted to a different decade of Berlin's architecture from the fifties through the eighties. (See "Seventies," above.) Other standouts include the D.O.G. Cardgame, which features original work by 20 different designers and challenges players with matching owners to their dogs and a book that traces the history of Berlin's iconic TV tower.

Review: Madonna's Confessions=***1/2

by Ari Bendersky

Madonna_chair_ab.jpg

One of this season’s most highly anticipated albums finally made its way across my desk –- and it hasn’t stopped playing since I got it. Madonna has outdone herself once again. On Confessions on a Dance Floor, the Queen Chameleon did what she should have done years ago –- create a non-stop, no-breaks-between-songs dance remix album.

For years, singles quickly followed up every album that Madonna released with various remixes by the likes of superstar DJs Junior Vasquez, Victor Calderone, Peter Rauhofer, Deep Dish and Tracy Young. And Confessions will likely have the same result, but the big difference here is that the DJs have a dance mix to work off of –- and hopefully take to another, more infectious level.

Wacom Cintiq

by Josh Rubin

21Ux 01 Incline Rotate

As you may remember, we're sponsoring the Wacom Cintiq-- competitors will be on stage drawing on these LCD tablets which are big enough (21") for the audience to see the work in progress. I dropped by the motion graphics firm UV/Phactory earlier this week to get a demo of the Cintiq and was pretty blown away. The screen is crisp and clear, the surface is nice to draw on and the tools are incredibly precise. I want one.

The Cintiq is available for $2500 at these resellers, though most of them appear to be on backorder until later this month.
