Wolf Parade by Ami Kealoha

wolfparade.jpgWolf Parade is the latest Montreal export worth more than a listen. Their first full-length album, Apologies to the Queen Mary, is a driving mix of indie backbeats with psychedelic, artsy, and electronic influences. Like the oft-compared Arcade Fire, the upshot is an eclectic yet tightly produced answer to all the retro rock of late and the vocals share more than a little bit with the pathos of fellow Canadians Death From Above 1979. An apt description of the balanced music comes from their own lyrics opening the track "This Heart's on Fire": Sometimes we rock and roll/Sometimes we stay at home/And it's just fine."

Pick up their album and merch from Sub Pop.

Papercuts: You Can Have What You Want
The third album for Papercuts, You Can Have What You Want, highlights a strongly maturing Jason Robert Quever, who's still a nostalgic songwriter but is bringing a new level of mastery to his trademark sound in good form. Looking back to the first impression of the SF band in 2004, the lo-fi aesthetic of Mockingbird was a hazy and modern take on the old....
The Journal of Popular Noise
In the age of digital everything, we're all a little nostalgic for something tangible to hold and experience here in "first life." Recognizing this, The Journal of Popular Noise is a new limited-edition publication "inspired by the traditions of pop music, printed periodicals, and the delight of a finely crafted artifact."Each volume features three issues in the form of three 7"s, each by a...
Ursula 1000: Here Comes Tomorrow
"Savoir Faire is everywhere!" Ever since I first met this very unassuming maestro back in 1999 at DC's infamous Eighteenth Street Lounge, I've always been impressed with the high contrast between Alex Gimeno's mild-mannered in person demeanor and his jet set persona "Ursula 1000," a name that is defined by swift navigation of stylistic currents, savvy sense of humor (in song titles, art work...
Gonzales: Solo Piano
Minimal, sparse, and beautiful, Solo Piano is unlike anything else I’m listening to right now. Canadian-born musician, producer, and rapper Gonzales has worked with everyone from Jane Birkin, to Daft Punk, to ex-label mate Peaches. Critics compared him to Eminem, Prince, and Beck when his debut record, Gonzales Uber Alles, came out with a bang in 2000. That being said, this one might throw...
