Hokusai's famous wave, already re-imagined by Kozyndan as a tide of bunnies, got a new medium when Levi's exec and surfer Caroline Calvin handcrafted a 22 foot by 12 foot jeans mosaic that depicts a detail of the "The Great Wave." Called "Love and Peace," after debuting at a special event during Los Angeles's fashion week this Wednesday October 19th and showing a second time in Japan, 32 of the 35 pairs from the artwork will be distributed and sold in stores in New York, London, Los Angeles, Tokyo and San Francisco. Each unique piece has the words "Love and Peace" across the back, features a button from Calvin's personal collection, comes with a scroll describing the process with photographs by her husband, photographer Peter Calvin, and will retail for $1,000. Chris Beckman has moved from the canvas to denim in a new series of work for Polo Jeans Co. A limited edition of 600 hand painted jeans, inspired by Chris's work, will be sold to help promote the denim company's GIVE (Get Involved. Volunteer. Exceed.) program to encourage community service. I was skeptical of how good these would look, but given the opportunity to...
Unconventional in every sense of the word, Melbourne duo Hank and Matlok are causing a stir down under with cutting-edge art, quirky prints and intelligent fashion. That's what we normally do. Matlok: Yeah,...
Mandala, a Sanskrit word of Hindu origin, most often refers to a symmetrical detailed pattern representing the universe and the unconscious self. In some religions it serves as an aid in meditation or to establish a sacred space as well. For Japanese artist Mario Tauchi, who illustrated 108 black-and-white versions of Mandalas for Trolley Book's "Mario Mandala." the motif plays a slightly different role....
In his latest show Montreal based artist Kevin Ledo references images from highly visible fashion advertisements such as Dior, Prada, and Louis Vuitton. He aims to draw parallels between modern fashion advertising and iconic Christian art of medieval times by transposing methods of religious paintings into an advertising context. Kevin's paintings have been on display to date in both Taiwan and Canada. He is...
Believe in the power of bread. That was the idea behind Japanese artist Tatsumi Orimoto's "Bread Man" performance art series in the '90s. Meant as a unifying symbol of communication, he made his name with the body of work which involved global travel to places like Nepal and Germany with loaves of bread tied around his head while a puzzled public looked or laughed...
We were among the excited first today to check out A.P.C.'s latest store (and the second of their outlets worldwide) today in Brooklyn. Called A.P.C. Surplus for its flat 60% discounted prices, the Williamsburg storefront is housed in a beautiful former bank with plenty of rustic charm (i.e. it looks as if it recently caught fire). At only 600 square feet, the space feels...
