Cool Hunting

Each October, for the past 4 years, DJ's, artists and tropical treasure hunters make their way down to Old San Juan Puerto Rico to bask in the warmth that is the Candela Art and Music Festival. Candela, also the name of the main club/gallery on calle San Sebastian in Old San Juan, continues to play host to underground artists and dj's from around the world, and the lucky few that know Old San Juan is the place to be in mid-October.
Past DJ's have included, Bobbito aka "Cucumber Slice," Rich Medina, Karl Injex and Tyler Askew of Rudemovements, Osunlade, Karen P., DJ Cute, Nickodemus of Turntables on the Hudson, Busquelo, Quantic, Rawjak and Matthias Heilbronn among others. Artists have included Mode2, Doze Green, Lee Quinones, Dustin Ross, Swifty, Mitchy Bwoy, Ease1, Skwerm, HVW8, Swoon, SBTG, Shepard Fairey, Dzine, Chris Mendoza and others.
This year's highlights included a live sneaker customization by Singapore's own SBTG, who killed it by creating a Candela/Rude Adidas superstar. SBTG painted, printed and glued while his cohort Haz from Rawjak and club Zouk in Singapore was cleaning house on the decks downstairs, accompanied by equally impressive dj sets from Bobbito and the Rudemovements krew. Another high-point was the a rooftop screening of Pablo Aravena's new documentary on urban art titled "Next: A primer on Urban Painting." The movie features many of the artists from past Candela Festivals as well as other painters, bombers, and smak-talkers from across the globe.
Friday night club-hangers were privy to a live painting by the HVW8 krew, who by now are well known in the streets of Old San Juan. Festival goers were also treated to a vibrant mix of live music from local plena and bomba groups at club Rhumba and an evening of serious salsa riddims in Plaza de San Sebastian, where a live stage was setup.
Of course, the extra bonuses of un viaje to Puerto Rico include fresh snapper by the beach, Medalla beer by the bushel, all the mofongo you can eat, and beaches with crystal clear waters and palm trees into the horizon... I gotta get back.

Broken up like a tennis tournament, the Hess is More Open began in New York 1 June 2007 with a live performance by Cool Hunting favorite, Hess is More. A trio, Mikkel Hess, Nikolaj Hess and Jens Bjornkjaer, will be performing new and original live sets throughout the month at various venues mixing electronic and acoustic elements into an entirely new experience. This weekend...
Known for his artistic collaborations with the likes of Tim Hawkinson and Marcel Dzama on his album art and working with Paperrad on a recent video, Beck's concerts, with live video projections, acoustic versions of songs, and props, also embrace a multi-disciplinary approach to music. Beck's mix of inspiration and laidback California style showed up last week in NYC like when he performed of...
As promised, Ari Kushnir delivers a full report on last week's Music, Multimedia, Miami conference. In addition to reporting on all the music festivities, Ari notes that "backed up with events like Art Basel and the M3 Summit, the future of Miami is brighter and hotter than the sand at noon." Read his story after the jump....
Bravery. Hailing from New York, the Bravery evokes 80s New Wave that you can rock and dance to with a look that says they really like the Clash -- except on days when they're feeling Andy Warhol. The band got its start more or less as a backlash to the citys electroclash scene, which singer Sam Endicott has openly admitted to hating - at...
Jay Hannan, another stellar DJ. This 2-CD set was a direct result of the Lazy Dog club night they put on every Sunday in Notting Hill in London and it was some of the best deep house produced in the late 90s. They followed this up with a second volume and then sadly, after five years, announced the dissolution of Lazy Dog to...
The queen of her own stratum, Bjork's talent is the type where we've come to expect the unexpected. As is the case with all her projects, I've been gleefully indulging in her new multimedia undertaking Voltaic as if I were discovering the Icelandic chanteuse all over again. Closing the chapter of the past powerful two years of her career, this reently-released live album is...
