Beck Live by Ami Kealoha
Known for his artistic collaborations with the likes of Tim Hawkinson and Marcel Dzama on his album art and working with Paperrad on a recent video, Beck's concerts, with live video projections, acoustic versions of songs, and props, also embrace a multi-disciplinary approach to music. Beck's mix of inspiration and laidback California style showed up last week in NYC like when he performed of "Lonesome Tears" on harmonium accompanied by the backup band's hand clapping and foot stomps. Some moments, like when a giant boombox descends from the ceiling, feel a little random, but visuals by Tokyo artist DJ Bunzo set the stage well and add a level of polish.

Boards of Canada : Campfire Headphase
Not new but worthy of mention here, the latest Boards Of Canada album "Campfire Headphase," released last month on Warp records is to me the music my dreams are made of. The new arrival of guitar (however warbled) to the BOC sound just adds a new layer of authenticity to their magical oeuvre. Its so easy to forget how cold it is outside when...

Wolf Parade
Wolf Parade is the latest Montreal export worth more than a listen. Their first full-length album, Apologies to the Queen Mary, is a driving mix of indie backbeats with psychedelic, artsy, and electronic influences. Like the oft-compared Arcade Fire, the upshot is an eclectic yet tightly produced answer to all the retro rock of late and the vocals share more than a little bit with...

Grooves Magazine
Dubbed laptop rock, noise, minimalist techno, and disco punk (among other off-sounding terms), Grooves magazine covers a wide range of "experimental electronic music." The most recent issue includes profiles of DFA's Juan Maclean, the "goth-hop" pioneer Alias (Anticon), and reviews the emerging Oakland-based group n5md's Run_Return. Clearly geared toward electronic music heads, over 24 pages of reviews and a geeked-out section on the latest...

CocoRosie: Noah's Ark
Sisters Bianca and Sierra Casady, known as CocoRosie, came on the scene with the 2004 release of La Maison de Mon Reve, an eclectic mix of pared-down beats and vocals that spawned multiple comparisons of the duo to chanteuses of yesteryear on psychedelics. Their sophomore effort, Noah's Ark, with melodic piano and simple electro beats, similarly conjures images of smoky dens filled with mythical...
