Lux 11

by Ami Kealoha

Lux 11, a new hotel that opened in Berlin's hip Mitte district in July, wins points for a location central to many of the city's best boutiques and restaurants and, with the addition of an Italian-Asian fusion restaurant (slated to open mid-November), Tietgen und Kahlcke's Aveda spa, Ulf Haines' (buyer of the the famed Quartier 206) store, and café, does its own part in upping the area's destinations.

Conceived more as a boarding house than hotel, the reception desk is only open during business hours and cleaning services occur every few days. Each of the 72 "apartments" include a full kitchen, fax, phone with voicemail, a safe, DVD player, LCD television, queen or king size beds (no twins), Lux's own line of toiletries, Linari room scents, and ceiling-mounted "rain" showerheads. Designed by London architect team Silvestrin/Salmaso, lichen-colored poured concrete forms the basis for pared-down open floorplans offset by eggshell white and wood-accented furniture. Executive and Premiere suites feature bathtubs and two televisions, smaller rooms look onto a rear courtyard while larger ones face the street, and nightly rates start at a modest 115 euros.

A Design Hotel affiliate - they were featured in the Design Hotels 2005 Yearbook - reservations can be made through their or Lux's website.

When it comes to anything mobile Europe has always been ahead of the U.S. For example, there have been mobile dating/mating applications over there for years. Flirtomatic, the latest player, launched yesterday and promises to be the new industry leader. It's very well designed, simple to use online or on your mobile phone and makes it easy to connect with people by introducing those who have similar interests.

Elizabeth Hickock's Jell-O Masterpiece

by Evan Orensten

San Francisco artist and designer Elizabeth Hickock has created an hommage to her city unlike any you've probably ever seen before. It's also a testament to her skills in the kitchen. The prints have a peaceful, eerie glow that pulls you in. The short film shows San Francisco in an earthquake, where fortunately the buildings only wobble.

Skullflower Ring

by Josh Rubin

Skullflower-Ring

Just when I thought I was getting over the skull thing, this ring crossed my path to set me straight. A macabre masterpiece, it's best worn on a thumb or index finger so you can see the full skull garland. Klaus Lohmeyer is a Munich-based jewelry maker and craftsman behind Werkstatt:München who have a rather complete line of hand finished skull jewelry and accessories.

Other skull rings: Driftwood Skulls, Taroshooten Skull Ring, Smallthings
