Denim Hokusai
by Ami Kealoha
Hokusai's famous wave, already re-imagined by Kozyndan as a tide of bunnies, got a new medium when Levi's exec and surfer Caroline Calvin handcrafted a 22 foot by 12 foot jeans mosaic that depicts a detail of the "The Great Wave." Called "Love and Peace," after debuting at a special event during Los Angeles's fashion week this Wednesday October 19th and showing a second time in Japan, 32 of the 35 pairs from the artwork will be distributed and sold in stores in New York, London, Los Angeles, Tokyo and San Francisco. Each unique piece has the words "Love and Peace" across the back, features a button from Calvin's personal collection, comes with a scroll describing the process with photographs by her husband, photographer Peter Calvin, and will retail for $1,000. Nokia E Series Pics
by Josh Rubin
We got to play with some samples of the new Nokia E series today. The hardware felt pretty close to final, but the software is still a bit buggy. Nothing that can't be worked out before their launch next year, though. Overall, we were very impressed. The E70 is a little taller and wider than the Sony Ericsson K750i, but not much thicker. It's still is totally pocketable, though, and the flip out QWERTY keyboard is worth the extra size. The E61 was also great-- thinner and shorter than the Treo and just a little bit wider.
More pics after the jump.
Scion Installation
by Ami Kealoha
This Saturday October 15th, Scion launches the final show in the touring group exhibition dubbed, "Installation," in Los Angeles. Featuring contemporary urban artists and graphic designers at the forefront of their fields, including Futura (pictured), David Choe, and Crash, the commissioned works in the show all are the same three by eight foot size. Stopping in 13 cities nationwide, the 2nd annual event's goal is to showcase the artists to as wide an audience as possible. A final auction to benefit Artists Helping Children, makes it a good cause in more ways than one. The show runs through October 23rd, but you can bid online here.
Holden EFIJY Concept Car
by Evan Orensten
The Holden EFIJY concept car was unveiled at the Australian Auto Show yesterday. Based on the spirit and style of the 1953 FJ Holden, it has been reimagined with the latest technology and design and delivers "retro, mumbo and gizmos." The car is built on a Chevrolet Corvette underbody and features a V8 Supercar engine. The pillarless, fiberglass body sports a retro-Hollywood glamour long on curves, muscle, and power.

Sneaker Freaker, the Book
by Ami Kealoha
Culling the best of the first six editions of the bi-annual Sneaker Freaker, the book version is a convenient alternative to shelling out more than seven times the cover price for original back issues (if you can even find them) on Ebay. Following the same tried-and-true mix of interviews, profiles, and other editorial tidbits accompanied by drool-inducing images and printed on matte stock, the compilation is an essential addition to any kicks addict's library.
For those uninitiated into sneaker fandom Sneaker Freaker's behind-the-shoes coverage, including a breakdown of what went into the Nike Considered line and a feature on Vans as well as unique angles such as an essay on the role of sneakers in prison and extensive coverage of fakes, makes for a primer to the culture that's as fascinating to read as it is fun to simply flip through for thie pictures.
No doubt the genuine enthusiasm of editor and founder Simon Wood (aka Woody), who has a collection in the hundreds himself, is a major factor in what makes the book an enjoyable read as well as a useful resource.
Due to hit bookstores this November, it's available for pre-order on Amazon.
