Beck Live
by Ami Kealoha
Known for his artistic collaborations with the likes of Tim Hawkinson and Marcel Dzama on his album art and working with Paperrad on a recent video, Beck's concerts, with live video projections, acoustic versions of songs, and props, also embrace a multi-disciplinary approach to music. Beck's mix of inspiration and laidback California style showed up last week in NYC like when he performed of "Lonesome Tears" on harmonium accompanied by the backup band's hand clapping and foot stomps. Some moments, like when a giant boombox descends from the ceiling, feel a little random, but visuals by Tokyo artist DJ Bunzo set the stage well and add a level of polish.

It's all about the Smallthings
by Evan Orensten
Teresa Robinson is a Portland, OR-based artist who makes jewelry from silver and glass by hand. Her designs feature organic forms and nature images such as birds and bees. They include rings, necklaces and ear rings. Our favorite is the skull, and you can get it in 10 different colors to suit any mood. Smallthings is available online and at several retail stores.
CocoRosie: Noah's Ark
by Ami Kealoha
Sisters Bianca and Sierra Casady, known as CocoRosie, came on the scene with the 2004 release of La Maison de Mon Reve, an eclectic mix of pared-down beats and vocals that spawned multiple comparisons of the duo to chanteuses of yesteryear on psychedelics. Their sophomore effort, Noah's Ark, with melodic piano and simple electro beats, similarly conjures images of smoky dens filled with mythical creatures and includes guest appearances by fellow genre-defying musicans, Antony and Devendra Banhart.
Their show this Wednesday, October 12th at Tonic in NYC benefits Amnesty International's work to stop human trafficking for and kicks-off their European tour.
Papa Stour
by Josh Rubin
Papa Stour is a new web boutique featuring the work of contemporary Scottish artisans. Neatly organized, the site is browsable by product type or artist and includes plenty of background information on the products and creators. This cashmere camo baby blanket by Queene & Belle is among my favorites in the shop. The silk screened Harris Tweed pillows by site founder Rosie Brown are also pretty great.
