The Drama 6 by Ami Kealoha

thedrama6.jpg

The Drama is a lo-fi magazine based in Virginia that covers off-the-beaten-track culture. Printed on matte stock, their most recent issue includes lush landscape photos that circumnavigate the globe by Russell Kleyn, profiles of artists and designers, exhibition and music reviews, and, in a newly added section in the back of the book, an interview with Caroline Hwang and comics by Vanessa Davis. Flipping through it is almost like meditating, a calming break from the more frenetic image-saturated pages usually found out there. You can find it at independent bookstores and magazine stores or pick it (and other artist-designed items) up at their retail counterpart The Drama Store.

Swindle #3 On Stands
From the ubiquitous Shepard Fairey, the third issue of Swindle is out now, featuring Space Invader on the cover. Inside, look out for a piece on Caroline Hwang's angsty embroidered art, a history of spray paint, and the world's first (and only?) all-female AC/DC cover band AC/Dshe. Like the first two editions, the quarterly publication is intended to be more permanent than the average...
Kozyndan
Kozyndan are in illustration couple that do fantastic artwork that is both witty and serene. Based in Los Angeles, the duo has created coverart for Postal Service. They blew me away a couple years back when I saw the cover they did for Giant Robot Magazine (issue #28). On this cover they took the classic Hokusai print, The Great Wave, and changed the surf...
Eye Noise Posters
Eye Noise has a whole bunch of really great silk screened posters made for many popular small bands you can never find posters for. They are all made by Thomas Scott, a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He has received national recognition by magazines like Communication Arts for his graphic design work and is featured in a couple of books like Next:...
Gary Panter: Pictures from the Psychedelic Swamp: 1972 – 2001
Fans of Pee Wee’s Playhouse, RAW and SLASH magazines and the comic character Jimbo know and love the work of Gary Panter. You probably know it too, having seen his “jagged lines and surreal cartoons” in magazines, on TV and on the internet too. “Pictures from the Psychedelic Swamp: 1972 – 2001” a micro-mini retrospective of thirty years of drawings, sculptures, painting and installations...
