London Design Festival 2005 by Ami Kealoha

London's always calling, but right now, with the 3rd annual London Design Festival running through September 30th, the siren song is a little louder. Exhibitions, cafes, and events take over the city and, curiously, most of what caught our eye happens on the East end, like Geoff McFetridge's premiere show in the UK at Kemistry Gallery (runs through October 5th), a Rococo installation of digitally printed tiles held in Digitile's showroom throught September 25th, and, for the lushes, the Scotch Malt Whiskey Society's show of unique labels created by 26 writer-designers teams' responses to sampling whiskies (through October 1st). Also of note, ecologically-minded events include an exhibit put together by the non-profit [re]design, the results of London Remade's Inspired Recycling initiative, a Dirt Café that invites debate loosely themed around the Slow Food movement, and a debate about sustainability.

The 50th London Film Festival
The 50th anniversary London Film Festival kicked off last night with the superb The Last King of Scotland (pictured right). It may not be immediately obvious from the title, but it's about African despot Idi Amin, who ruled, and ruined, Uganda in the 1970s. Forest Whittaker plays Amin, in a performance that should earn him at least an Oscar nomination. Rising Scottish star James...
Cockpit Arts at Canary Wharf
As much as the London Design Festival promotes creativity in the UK, it’s also (obviously) a chance for new designers to raise their profile and attract investors. Marrying creative talent with retail, Cockpit Arts, London's mega-nonprofit offering designers affordable workspace and business support, has commissioned installations from two designers for the Canary Wharf Window Galleries, a busy shopping center located in London's burgeoning Docklands...
The London Design Challenge
A participatory highlight of London's Design Festival, the London Design Challenge tasks members of the design community and general public with imagining ways to make London a better place to live and visit. With transport, entertainment, street-life, environment and housing themes, ideas so far include Poke's painting London white (an homage to This Boy's Life?), as well as Tom Dixon's electric bus and Barbara...
