Skewville's Secret Lab Revealed

by Ami Kealoha

skewville1.jpg

If you've ever noticed a pair of wood sneakers dangling from power lines, you've likely witnessed the work of New Jersey-born identical twins Ad and Droo, aka Skewville. The fake sneaker installations (they call the project and their website When Dogs Fly) dates back to '99, but for over a decade the New York artists have been leaving sneaker footprints on walls, installing their art in Fred Segal's Conveyor store, reconfiguring construction sites to say "Fresh" or "Fame Game," and otherwise altering spaces with their brand of artful commentary. Opening October 1st, an exhibition at the Basement Air Gallery in the Lower East Side will unveil their so-called secret laboratory, revealing such objects as a machine that creates a third twin (uh, a triplet?), historical artifacts, and other mechanized and interactive pieces. Curated by Puffarella, a member of their street team, she says the show deals with issues relating to the street scene like "fame and the idea of hype." The subterranean show runs through November 1st.

TranStrap

by Josh Rubin

Transtrap-Main

I think of riding the subway as urban snowboard practice; I'm also a bit of a germaphobe. This usually results in a wide stance with back to doors and hands in pockets. But sometimes the ride is particularly bumpy or I'm just not in the mood and this results in the uncouth pulling of a shirt sleeve over the hand to provide a barrier between me and the bar.

These complications are entertaining, but sometimes it would be nice to have an alternative. Apparently the folks at Transtrap had the same idea. They've made a simple hook and loop that you take with you on the train to serve as a personal subway strap. There are 3 models to choose from ranging from $15 - $17.

Florent Bi-Decadent Ball Benefitting Friends of the High Line

by Evan Orensten

florent.jpg

If you'll be in New York on October 22nd we encourage you to celebrate two of our favorite things: Restaurant Florent, a Meatpacking District institution, will be throwing a 20th birthday party benefitting The High Line. There will also be a gallery show with a variety of art and artifacts illustrating the Meatpacking District's transformation from "a place only meatpackers, tranny whores, and famished club kids once dared to tread to the commercially vibrant, pseudo-Sex in the City sideshow it's become." Tickets and information here.
