RISD's New Digs

by Ami Kealoha

Known for alumni who consistently go on to shine in nearly every creative field from architecture to cinematography, it's only logical to apply the principles of good design taught at RISD to daily life in the dorms. It's even better still to use in-house talent like planners did when confronted with furnishing a new dorm. The housing director turned to DEZCO, a firm made up of three current RISD faculty, Peter Walker, John Dunnigan, and Rosanne Somerson. (The latter two are RISD alums themselves.) Concerned with issues of functional, elegant design as well as sustainability, the team came up with Sage, which consists of 13 designs ranging from desks to couches. The upshot is a line of furniture that uses ecological materials, shows minimal hardware, is designed for longevity, and is economical to manufacture. Sage will soon be available through Adden Furniture.

Art Prostitute 6: T-shirt Weekend

by Ami Kealoha

artprostitute6.jpg

A two-day event this September 17 and 18, at Williamsburg gallery Riviera, celebrates Art Prostitute's 6th issue by giving away exclusive tees designed by Los Angeles artist Luke Cheuh to the first 25 purchasers of the book. Printed on Eames paper (inspired by the couple's work and philosophy; check out Eames Office site for a nerdy Rebus if you need to waste some time), the edition comes with unfolded prints, features work by The Clayton Brothers, Seonna Hong, Florencio Zavala, and Brendan Monroe, and is also available through Art Prostitute's website. The NYC release party compliments a show of more tees from lines by two Brooklyn-based screenprinters, 1AEON and YES Labs.

Blag

by Ami Kealoha

blag.jpg blag1.jpg

Neatly solving a toss-up between putting hip-hop balladeer Common (pictured left) or Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd on the cover, British magazine Blag chose both, placing the former on the front and the latter on the back. That kind of casual innovation is the norm for this arts-and-culture tome, founded over a decade ago and produced by twins Sarah and Sally Edwards. The most recent issue features informal interviews with the cover boys (Common's about to embark on a U.S. tour with Kanye West this fall, by the way), as well as with other of-the-moment artists, like Mike Mills and Kenzo Minami. Full of fashion spreads, profiles of up-and-comers, and a few fresh takes on regular magazine sections, like a freewheeling guide to L.A. by local resident Money Mark, the UK import (sans any traditional advertising) is a refreshing twist on regular glossies. The big-name, big-format freedom doesn't come without strings, of course; the magazine features a six-page creative spread created by three artists whom Blag tasked with taking photos using a prominent digital company's new product.
