The Orphanage, 6 Questions

by Ami Kealoha

orphanage1.jpg orphanage2.jpg

I know I've got California on the line when Orphanage cofounder Scott Stewart and founding member Dav Rauch volunteer their astrological signs (Cancer and Taurus, respectively) within minutes into the conversation. At the crossroads of design and technology, San Francisco was a natural birthplace for the Emmy-nominated effects company where Rauch (pictured, right) continues to design and direct in their Presidio Park offices (soon to be the home of George Lucas' headquarters as well). Stewart (pictured, left), a producer, writer, and director, focuses more on live action production at their sister outpost in Hollywood. Also known for their Magic Bullet software that lends a film look to video, keep an eye out for more visual stunners in the team's upcoming Dr. Pepper and X-box commercials. Here Rauch and Stewart fill us in on the virtues of working with talented people, the DV revolution, and learning to surf. Welcome to part VI of our lead-up to the Semi-Permanent design conference.

PostSecret Book

by Josh Rubin

Cell1

By now you must have heard of PostSecret-- the ongoing community art project where people mail-in their secrets anonymously on one side of a homemade postcard. It's a sometimes humorous and oftentimes chilling look at the things people never say, but really want to. Frank Warren, the creator of PostSecret, has compiled hundreds of the submissions in a hardcover book that will be released in December. Amazon is taking pre-orders.

Maximilian's Schell

by Carol T Chung

Los Angeles, CA - Outside of the Materials and Applications Architecture and Landscape Research courtyard resides a giant yellow black hole. Created by Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues, this rendition of "the deadliest force in the Universe" is entitled Maximilian's Schell, after the actor's portrayal of Dr. Hans Reinhardt in the sci-fi thriller, The Black Hole. The installation will be up until November. Check the Materials & Applications site for further details.

UPDATE: Check out centripetalnotion's beautiful flickr set of Maximilian's Schell that was posted in the reader contribution section.

Double Punch

Looking for something special that all the other hipsters out there don't have? Well then, if you're out in San Francisco and tired of hitting up those other tried and true designer toy shops, then head over to Double Punch in North Beach for a more eclectic hand picked assortment of goodies. The store also features a gallery space which is currently hosting the next installment of the popular train show from New York, renamed Board the Train, until September 18th. Don't live in San Francisco? Poor thing. But you can still check out the store's merchandise by going to Ningyoushi.com, their virtual doppleganger.
