The Breakin' Collection on DVD by Evan Orensten

Breakin-Dvd-Case

MGM has finally released Breakin', Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo and Beat Street as a boxed set. This treo of classic films from 1984 document early hip hop's beginnings through its music and dance. They may seem a bit dated, and life was certainly simpler without the wars, the bling and the money, but these films have their time and place in our cultural and musical history. Look closely and you'll see Jean-Claude van Damme workin' it in a bikini at the beach in Breakin', and appearances by Melle Mel, Doug E Fresh, Kool Moe Dee, the Rocksteady Crew, Jazzy Jeff, and Arthur Baker in Beat Street. The set is available from Amazon (next week).

Modeselektor
Long the de facto home of techno music, it's no surprise that Berlin is bursting at the seams with electronic music. But it is a rare feat when one of these artists transcends the club scene like Modeselektor. A staple of the German capital's underground party circuit dating back to the mid-'90s, the group produces a genre-straddling brand of glitchy beats that are equal...
Bugz in the Attic: Back in the Doghouse
Formed in 1996, the pioneering, now eight-member collective of underground dance music, Bugz in the Attic, bring their full ass-motivating arsenal, garnered from 10 years of single releases and classic remixes, on their long-overdue first full-length release, Back in the Dog House. With close to 100 songs already under their belt—both originals and reworkings for a diverse range of internationally known artists, including Zero...
Rewind this Video: M.I.A.'s Galang
the video: “She is so FLY.” Well, a mountain of music press later, with her full-length album on the horizon for its US release (February 22), I must say. I. Agree. M.I.A. has returned me to the realm of obsessive teenage excitement with her exuberant fuck it all style. (I want to be just like her! We’'re both Dragons!) She’s a hyper-conscious, ultra-cool, bi-...
Mare139: B-Line B-Boy Drawings and Sculpture
by Tamara Warren With a discerning eye Carlos “Mare139” Rodriguez deconstructs the kinesthetic of the b-boy in a new series of work on display at the 58 Gallery in New Jersey through this month. (See details below.) The show is a play on contrasts, featuring striking array of stark black-and-white drawings and sharp-edged metallic sculptures that interplay to create a dynamic dialogue. Each piece has...
