Glorious Graphics

by Parker Hutchinson

We've all long been warned not to judge a book by its cover, but seeing this delectable jacket by designers Non-Format was enough to cause me to brush conventional wisdom aside and purchase Sean Wilsey's recent autobiography on spec. The team's online portfolio is a tour of handsomely au courant graphic design. Their works are both modern and organic, featuring a complementary mix of bold typefaces and flowing, organic embellishments with rich textures and odd humor. An affinity for monochromatic palettes contributes to their unusually eye-popping designs that almost literally jump off the screen or page. Non-Format's work has been commissioned for a slew of indie recordings and featured in many print publications, including a four-year art directorship at Wire magazine. View more of their work after the jump, or visit their website for the full archive.

American Apparel Mexico City

by Ami Kealoha

American Apparel threw a flea market-themed pre-party for its first Mexican shop last month on Mexico City's Masaryk Street (their take on the Champs-Elysees). The event launched a campaign by the Mexican photographer Napoleón Habeica who produced a series of images with the distinct American Apparel "everyday sexy" vernacular that make even me blush. (The one pictured here is the least naughty of the bunch.) Habeica's photos as well as co-founding Mexico City's first free weekly newspaper with Babybabybaby magazine continues American Apparel's tradition of bringing indie multi-media to retail.

According to the website, a Playa del Carmen store opens August 5th and will be followed by the Mexico City outpost on August 12th.
