Cool Hunting
Betsy Ross, Aimee Dolby's line of chic user-friendly clothing patterns, is one of the most recent additions to the growing DIY institution. Thanks to O.G.s like ReadyMade magazine (I'm a regular contributor), new kid Make, and the Renegade Craft Fair, modern crafty products like Dolby's have an established market. Her stylish kits, which include two skirts, a blouse, a dress, pants, and a tote, all come with a detailed instruction booklet, a bookmark featuring a glossary and technique, and a sturdy well-designed pattern (so crisp-looking it could double as wrapping paper) that can be easily sized to fit. Betsy Ross' thorough guides take the intimidation-factor out of sewing and, thanks to Dolby's sweetly charming sense of humor, even make it fun. Look out for a circle skirt, another blouse, and a fall coat in the near future.

Like Legos, shrinky sheets (you may remember them as ShrinkyDinks) are a grade-school era toy that's maybe even better for grown-ups. ReadyMade magazine is staging a comeback of the material with the introduction of it into their online store. With a little inspiration and an oven, the 8½x11 sheets turn brighter, as well as shrink, harden and thicken, transforming into a key chain, fruit...
Often considered a marketing invention to help boost sales in an otherwise slow economic period for retailers, Valentine's Day needn't be another excuse to express love through our capalitistic, consumeristic ways. There are plenty of options to give without hitting the mall, so this year CH decided to put together a list of homemade Valentines gifts (and kits). If you're short on time and/or...
Featured earlier this week for its ReadyMade Store has a few other items that piqued our interest. One is their Clock Kit, which allows you to make your own unique timepiece from just about anything. Basically a box of parts, the kit includes everything you'll need except the clock face, which you provide. Put in a couple of hours of rummaging and a little...
The craft-loving ReadyMade, a magazine once described to me as "Martha Stewart Living for hipsters," is offering a few great items from the lesser-known retail side of their operation. The customizable "Make-A-Sign" is a cheap and fun way to bring classic diner charm into the home. The menu board, available in 5x7" and 8x10", comes with a set of ever-rearrangeable letters that, in the...
The super glossy product magazine coveted by the ladies is no longer just for the them--Nylon recently introduced a magazine targeted at "hip guys", called Nylon Guys. I was a bit skeptical at first, but I think they have done pretty well with it so far. I got to sit with the first issue for a bit, and it was honestly packed to the...
From the creators of the pristine Big magazine comes a new b&w oversized newsprint FREE fashion magazine hitting NYC on April 1, 2005. From what I can tell some ex Vice magazine staffers are responsible for this new-feeling paper and looks like it could be interesting. I hope. Check out somethinginthewaymag.com...
