Cool Hunting
The multi-format publication Visionaire, one of our perennial favorites, has teamed up with Distributed Art Publishers to create an ambitious bookstore with an expiration date. ARTBOOK AT VISIONAIRE will carry rare books from the fields of art and design in its New York showroom, but only until September 8, when its doors shut for good. Its inaugural event was a signing by Tina Barney for her book The Europeans, and future visits are planned for Richard Prince, Alex Katz and Vanessa Beecroft. The latter graces the store Thursday, July 14, for a screening of her performance art piece VB53, in which twenty-one models were planted in a plot of earth, all of them nude except for Helmut Lang shoes wrapped around their ankles. She'll be signing the book that documents her artistic undertaking, a commentary on the body, beauty and identity.

When the 43rd issue of Visionaire comes out next month it will be the first to use a revolutionary process called laser-cutting. No ink will be used because the images will be etched out of a blank black page. Based in SoHo NYC, Visionaire focuses on art and fashion and is known for pushing the limits of publishing process, presentation and content with each...
Wave Books is a poetry publisher clearly smitten with books as objects. Born from the ashes of Verse Press in 2005, the independent Seattle-based press consistently produces volumes that reflect the care and consideration given to the poems themselves. There's no clear thread running through their diverse catalog — Wave, instead, describes its aim as "publishing the best in American poetry by new and...
The impending fear of the end for print magazines seems to have only inspired publishers to prove everyone wrong by refining and, at times, redesigning their pages. This year's finalists for best magazine design, announced by the Society of Publication Designers—or SPD— are some of the best we've seen. While some of the usual suspects were rightfully chosen—like Wired, W, GQ and Dwell—the SPD's...

Transmaterial, Blain Brownell's wonderful newsletter of all sorts of building material innovations, is finally being published as a book. Tile Toy and Flexicomb are just a couple of the fascinating things we found out about through TM and we're looking forward to the book both as brain candy and as a resource for more. There will be over 200 items not previously shared and...
From the original ReadyMakers themselves (founders Shoshana Berger and Grace Hawthorne) comes this new book full of the same kind of clever, well-designed projects that have earned ReadyMade props from the National Magazine Awards and design snobs alike. An idea-well of projects includes a Moss-worthy glass water bottle chandelier (pictured after the jump) to instructions that suggest readers cut a window in the cover...
