Off The Wall by Parker Hutchinson
Technologically speaking, the "On/Off Switch" by Tobias Wong may not be as advanced as its kitschy precursor The Clapper, but it's surely a hell of a lot classier. Wong has emancipated the familiar lightswitch from its predictable position on the wall, encased it in lucite and placed it literally in the palm of your hand. Essentially a remote control for home lighting, this wireless wonder allows its users to flick from up to 100 feet away. The stylish switch is perhaps most practical by the bedside (where it will help prevent late-night injuries and impress new guests), though its clever design is likely to be a turn-on in any room of the house.
Available from GNR8 Design for $119.

LED Mirror
This Mirror from Suck has an LED display that can be programmed to scroll whatever text you want. The nifty thing is that the LEDs are hidden behind the glass so the mirror's surface is clean and simple (and when the lights are off, you have no idea they're even there). via apartment therapy...

Simplehuman Single Cup Pod Brewer
Simplehuman, makers of well designed things for the kitchen and laundry room, have just launched their first kitchen appliance: The Single Cup Pod Brewer. Water is heated to 200º (considered optimal by many baristas) and forced through the single use coffee pods, which are widely available from most coffee suppliers. The brewer is best for a cup in the morning at home or to...

Hands on: My Beating Heart
My Beating Heart, the pillow with a beat, made it's way around various web sites last week when it was first announced. We got our hands on one to take a closer look... The heart shaped pillow, invented by artist Yury Gitman, has a small motor in it that is programmed to give a life-like pulse when turned on. The pillow itself is about...

City Kitty
I don't have a cat and probably never will, but if I did a CitiKitty mine would be. Invented by Rebecca Rescate and her husband when they moved in to a small NYC apartment, the training starts as a litter box placed on the toilet seat. Over time you remove the inner rings, reducing the amount of litter used and teaching the cat to...

Power Strip Liberator
On a regular basis I profess the definition of design to be an exercise in problem solving. The Power Strip Liberator is a perfect example of what I consider great design. It's a one foot long extension cord that bridges your power strip to the bulky plug so that none of the outlets are blocked. Of course solving this problem creates yet another one--...

Hot Choz
French designer David L'Hôte seems to be just as fed up with wires as I am. Centfils (translating to something like 100 wires) is a series of design concepts that address the increasingly problematic proliferation of electrical wires. From left to right: Octave goes under the desk for all those computer peripherals, Odile on top of the desk for the mobile devices and Oscar...
