Post-It Note Mosaic
by Ami Kealoha
Never pay for sex, drugs, or office supplies, especially when you can put them to noble causes like Mental Hygiene's Post-it masterpiece. Assembled over a weekend in the artist's office, the wall art can be recreated or you could come up with your own effigy using the thorough instructions posted on the site.
SF Ferry Building's Thursday Night Market
by Ami Kealoha
San Francisco's Ferry Building Marketplace is a compendium of gourmet food vendors, restaurants, and retail naturally evolved from the longstanding farmer's market that was held in the Embarcadero locale. If you find yourself downtown, the soaring ceilings leftover from the building's past as a terminal for transbay ferries make for a great destination to shop European-style or to lunch on some of California's finest artisanal foods.
During Summer months from 4pm-8pm the Ferry Building hosts a Thursday Night Market, an event that gathers a cast of local farmers and merchants in what has become something of a tradition for farmer's markets. Running through at least October, it's a perfect appetizer for dinner at the famed Vietnamese spot The Slanted Door, also housed in the building.
The Cloud Room
by Ari Bendersky
With a breakout summer single – Hey Now Now – The Cloud Room is the latest indie band from the Brooklyn art rock scene to capture my attention. With a sound that nods toward Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie and Joy Division, the Cloud Room may get lumped into the new wave of new wave bands but their music has more edge, more heart and possibly more soul. In the same way that Franz Ferdinand plays hyper fast yet melodic and beautiful music, Cloud Room grabs your attention right away – and holds on to it. I can’t tell you how many CDs I’ve listened to lately that get me excited in the first 30 seconds and then completely suck the rest of the album. Not the case with the Cloud Room’s self-titled dreamy, dreary CD. The songs are at times lofty and gorgeous while at other times dark and mysterious. Everyone’s been talking about Hey Now Now, which is a great track, but I think the poppy syncopation of Blackout! and stretched out vocals and plucky guitars of We Sleep in the Ocean both show a wider and stronger range –signaling good things to come for the band.
