Dreamland Artist Club 2005

by Ami Kealoha

I first became an ESPO (aka Steve Powers) fan a few years back when he roller-brushed over graffiti with his own tag during an undercover stint with LA's graffitti removal team. His next-level street art and candyland aesthetic (check out the bakery he staged at Deitch's Armory booth earlier this year) came together perfectly with his Dreamland Artist Club 2004.

This year's version of Powers' project, the Dreamland Artist Club 2005, opens next week and picks up where the last one left off, continuing to spruce up Coney Island with artist-painted signs and murals and adding a few new features. Brazilian twin artists Os Gemeos spent three weeks in May painting a mural (pictured), winners playing select games will take home artist-created prizes, and Powers, sign writer Matt Wright, and a rotating cast of sign-painters will paint commissioned signs at the Dreamland Artist Clubhouse Thursday through Sunday, 1pm-7pm, from opening day until Labor Day. Powers conceived the space as a "nexus for the artists and the community...a combination social club, salon, and functioning sign shop...to de-myth the process of making art." The front room will act as a meeting space and showroom hung with floor-to-ceiling signs, while the rear will be the actual workshop. It all kicks off June 18th with an opening co-hosted by Tokion.

CH Air Max 180

by Josh Rubin

The Air Max 180 pair that I designed during iD web site that I wasn't able to do at 255 is choose the stitch color. I definitely would have had 'dark cinder' stitching for a little added contrast.

The Other Pods...

by Evan Orensten

Almost as easy to take along as the small digital 'pods, these stylish Pod Caravans are incredibly functional for their size. Four people can sit comfortably for a meal around the table which disappears when the seating converts into a queen size bed. Plenty of storage is cleverly created under the kitchenette. You can buy them already kitted out in a few different styles, or you can finish it yourself starting at the very reasonable price of £2,550 (in the U.K.).

PuroBeach

by Ami Kealoha

PuroBeach.jpg

If you're heading to Sonar next week, you may want to take a detour to the Spanish island of Palma de Mallorca to enjoy PuroBeach, the latest add-on to Swede entreprenuer Mats Walhstrøm's hippie-lux boutique hotel Puro that he opened last year. Perched on a mini-peninsula that juts into Palma's bay, the new hangout offers beach and poolside dining and massages, morning yoga taught by Santa Monica imports, tai-chi, and spa treatments, all set to a soundtrack provided by DJ Fabian. Nightly parties with guest DJs balance daytime indulgences with nightime revelry.

Reservations are available online at Design Hotels or you can use their toll-free number: 00 800 37 46 83 57.

Kelly Osbourne. No, Seriously.

by Ari Bendersky

kellyosbourne.jpg

In the world of celebutainment, timing is everything – and unfortunately someone forgot to drop that memo to Kelly Osbourne.

Kelly, famous at first for being the bratty middle child of Ozzy, now has a singing career of her own, which may not have happened if it weren’t for star-maker Linda Perry.

Perry, who helped the careers of Pink and Christina Aguilera, co-wrote and produced Kelly’s sophomore effort, Sleeping in the Nothing, which came out June 7. The album is far removed from Kelly’s sad attempt at reproducing her father’s rock career, with a ridiculous cover of Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach.”

Sleeping in the Nothing is a synth-heavy album drunk with ‘80s new wave and dance pop influences. And I hate to admit it, but it's pretty damn good. If this CD had come across my desk unlabeled and anonymous, I would’ve liked it a lot more at first. Because I knew it was from Kelly Osbourne I scoffed at it -- and then listened with scrutiny. I’m glad I gave it a chance because I was pleasantly surprised.
