Living in a Box by Josh Rubin
Last year, German design firm Transalpin conceived a way to pass electricity through wood and named it Wood.e. The 12V current doesn't actually pass though the wood; there's conductive material layered in to the plywood.
This year, they created Living In a Box (above) as an example of how this innovative material could be applied. Normally separate pieces, chairs, tables, lamps and shelves, are integrated in to a singular installation with the profile of a box. While this concept may go above and beyond how you or I would use Wood.e, it's an interesting study in form and function. What excites me the most is that there are no ugly wires disturbing the nice clean lines.

New Wood Focused Furniture
Our friends over at Fast Company have put together a nice roundup of contemporary furniture, all executed in wood. These clean, simple designs allow the wood to really stand out for its natural beauty. Our favorite is the Zipshape I chaise lounge by SchindlerSalemerón, which unlike most wood chairs is actually two pieces cut by a router and fitted together instead of one whole piece...

Not only does he scout felled trees—with the help of area historical foundations and the City Parks Department—he mills the wood upstate, custom designs each piece, then constructs the finished product without the use of hardware, stains or harmful finishes. Moran crafts even the...

Brad Teasdale Mosaics
Brooklyn-based artist, Brad Teasdale, blends contemporary concrete and glass design with classical mosaic craftsmanship. Teasdale's aesthetic stems from a juxtaposition of the materials themselves. He combines glass, concrete, wood, and steel to articulate natural contrasts of "light and dark," "grit and beauty" and "permanence and change." His latest project, "Leela" (which means "god's play in Sanskrit), is a custom installation. To create it, Teasdale...

Linden Agave Singlefin Surfboard
Surfing, more than many other sports, is both more closely connected to and heavily dependent on the health of the planet, yet the industry's been slow to get away from the use of toxic and harmful materials in boards. This is mostly due to the fact that untraditional materials just don't perform as well. A great eco-friendly alternative without compromising board performance is Gary...
