Cool Hunting
Personal Data Forest by Josh Rubin
This image is a representation of all the data right here on Cool Hunting, created using Texone's Tree Applet. You point the applet to a web address and it translates the syntactic structure of the site to a tree visualization. It also creates a Midi file so you can hear a representation of the site. While this may be more fun than useful, there's no argument that it's fascinating (at least to me).

Name Voyager
The Name Voyager, from Baby Name Wizard, is a fascinating visualization of the US Social Security Administration's historical database of names. Enter part or all of any name and this little Java application will dynamically plot how many babies were given that name during each decade, instantly giving you a sense of when (if ever) that name was popular. I already knew Josh was...

Vintage Vandals
The Wurst Gallery has an new online exhibition called Vintage Vandals. They asked artists to find a framed piece of artwork at their local thrift shop and turn it into something of their own. It's an interesting mix of work. The piece displayed here is loosely titled "hug more trees" and was created by Andy Sargent. via Wooster Collective...

Twexus
Twexus is a database of over 20,000 digital photographs taken by Andreas Wacker. There are a couple different ways to search for photos, but my favorite is a feature called pairs. All it does is randomly select two photos to display side by side. More often than not, the juxtaposition is rather compelling....

Interview with Erik Madigan Heck of Nomenus Quarterly
by Laura Neilson In 2007, 23-year-old Erik Madigan Heck founded Nomenus Quarterly with the kind of arrogant fervor that only someone at that age could pull off. And perhaps it was that very same aplomb that made the multifaceted art and fashion publication so notoriously successful. Just one glance at the archives' roster of featured artists, designers and contributors, including Dries Van Noten, Helmut...

Society6
Aspiring artists looking to be discovered will find new micro-patronage site Society6 to be nothing less than a godsend. The service provides a virtual showroom for artists to display their work and vie for viewer support. Like Threadless, the more viewers who vote on a particular work, the higher up on the "Charts" the image will rise with the winning artist receiving a grant....

Wolfram Alpha Computational Knowledge Engine
Touted as a threat to Google's search-engine dominance, Wolfram Alpha doesn't warrant the comparison. The site is a different beast altogether, considered a "computational knowledge engine" by British founder Stephen Wolfram. It's more of an answer-engine that relies on its curated knowledge base of data, rather than rounding up websites based on keywords. Boasting north of 10 trillion pieces of data and over 50,000...
