Francine Spiegel: Congratulations! by Josh Rubin
Francine Spiegel is an LA-based artist who's works include photocollage, video, mixed media assemblages and freeform installations. All of her work is derived from samplings of funky feminine cyber-subcultures, techno debris from her studio floor and other random raw materials.
Spiegel’s loose, sprawling technique captures the Dionysian abandon of the fantasies on display, which are woven into shiny, brash webs with fetishistic textures. The pieces are rumpled and limp like debauched frocks or skins shed from identity crises, but the nonjudgmental viewpoint and equality given to all, from neo-hippie chick to chocolate bather, shape a twenty-first century vision of gathering and community.
Spiegel's first New York solo show will be at Silo from 12 March to 17 April.

The installation will be up until November. Check...

Wangechi Mutu
Wangechi Mutu’s new show “Little Touched” at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects is so complete and polished that it feels more like walking into a museum than a gallery. Originally from Kenya, Mutu’s work focuses on the constant exploration and discovery of identity as a woman, immigrant and African in New York City. Known for her lyric collages like “A’gave you” (pictured right), this...

Jimenez Lai
A simple description of Jimenez Lai's work is difficult. Taking architectural plans and renderings, the Ohio-based artist brings them into the world of comics, drawings and models in two- and three-dimensions. The juxtaposition exposes the absurdity of CAD in comics and comics in CAD. (Click image for detail.) This isn't the first time Jimenez Lai has been written up but now he's breaking through...

Two Lines Align: Drawings and Graphic Design by Ed Fella and Geoff McFetridge
I've always been drawn to the ambiguous nature of Geoff McFetridge's graphic design. His distinctive, and highly personal, visual language, built around "logofying ideas," reduce graphical narratives to the point where meaning is largely derived from the viewer's own imagination. Opening this Wednesday at the Redcat Gallery in downtown Los Angeles, an exhibition features his work alongside the veteran visual artist Ed Fella. Fella's...

Swoon: Drown Your Boats
Swoon's first Los Angeles solo exhibition, "Drown Your Boats" opens tomorrow, 16 February 2008 at New Image Art. Partially inspired by Angela Carter's collection of short stories "Burning Your Boats," which reinterprets traditional tales and twists the mundane, you can see the connection as Swoon work combines glimpses of everyday life, legends and variations on mythic themes in her own graceful style. Over the...
