Puma Mongolian Shoe BBQ
by Josh Rubin
Making custom sneakers is quite easy these days-- most of the major brands have the function available on their web sites. It's fun and easy and provides the instant gratification of seeing exactly what it will look like before you buy.
Puma's latest project, the Mongolian Shoe BBQ, is a natural evolution of the customization trend. It works rather simply, you walk in to the store and select the different parts that get assembled to make a shoe. You have a wide variety of color and material choices and there are no rules for matching, symmetry or pattern compatibility. Envisioned by Antonio Bertone (Global Director of Brand Management for Puma), "[the] Mongolian Shoe BBQ gives people the opportunity to touch and play with the fabrics and have more control over the finished product by being truly involved in the creative process."
What I love about the idea is that there's an element of surprise because you don't know exactly what it will look like until 3 weeks later when the assembled shoe arrives at your doorstep. I had lots of fun making my pair (pieces are pictured above). It's a lime green and camo combination just in time for Spring. When the finished shoes arrive I'll be sure to post some photos.
Bape World Coming Soon
by Josh Rubin
Japanese sneaker and street-wear brand, A Bathing Ape has launched their web site at bape.com, but nothing seems to be there. Well, that's not entirely true. There's a splash page with a big download button. I downloaded the file and ran it (with some hesitation). Immediately my firewall went off as the app tried to contact its home server. I let it thru (with a little more hesitation). Once the app loaded there was a 'coming soon' splash screen with the custom Bape camo pattern slowly shifting colors.
Who knows how long 'soon' will take, but I'll check back periodically to see if anything is there (yes, still with hesitation).
Thanks for the tip, Feature!
kMoby, Teany and an Intimate Live Show
by Ari Bendersky
Hotel, is No. 1 in Europe, the No. 2 most downloaded album on iTunes (it was No. 1 before Beck bumped it down a notch), hes currently on a press tour (more on that in a minute), and he just released Teany Book: Stories, Food, Romance, Cartoons and, of course, Tea.
The tome is a hilarious collection of self-help advice (how to cure a hangover), grooming tips (using tea bags to reduce puffy eyes with a picture of a Golden Retriever with tea bags on its eyes and a shower cap on its head), recipes (too many to list), comics (drawn by Moby himself) and a semi-faux history of the Lower East Side (L.E.S.) of New York with Moby and his business partner and former girlfriend Kelly Tisdale dressed up as immigrants. And at the front of the book, instead of just thanking one or two people each, Kelly and Moby have a goofy back-and-forth conversation about who they should give a nod to.
