Mustache March

by Josh Rubin

mustache march
Those crazy designers at Hanson Dodge Creative are nearing the end of a brilliant fundraiser-- for the month of March they guys at the firm are growing mustaches as a "Temporary Cultural Movement for the Benefit of Charity." This year's recipient is the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer, a research organization.

Mustache March, as they've branded it, is well documented on their site. There's a gallery of the 'growth' progress and all sorts of news. Recognizing the fact that the mustache is a bit passé these days, their strategy is brilliant because of the inevitable question from friends, family and even strangers, "why are you growing a mustache?" The way they see it, there are three motivations, "Revive a once-glorious grooming practice, humiliate ourselves in the process, and raise some cash for a worthy cause."

Complexification

by Josh Spear

Invaderhellol
This unusual work is made by Jared Tarbell, an artist and programmer from Albuquerque New Mexico. These graphics are all created through computer programs he creates. He says "With an algorithmic goal in mind, I manipulate the work by finely crafting the semantics of each program. Specific results are pursued, although occasionally surprising discoveries are made." The images are printed as Archival prints with pigmented archival inks on PH neutral paper. This piece, Hello Invaders, is a limited edition part of the Invader Fractal algorithm. There are about 10,000 unique invaders within the fractal. The arrangement of each invader is through what he calls a "recursive fractal method". This is all a mouthful--needless to say this work is original, and Jared is one talented programming-artist.

Got Crabs?

by Ari Bendersky

wisecracker_ari.jpg
The International Home & Housewares Show hit Chicago’s McCormick Place last week (admittedly not as cool as Carol's trip to the gaming convention in San Francisco, but I digress). After trekking miles through the three buildings (without a Sherpa, I might add) filled with things for your kitchen, bathroom, garden, backyard, pets and more, I found a handful or so great gadgets that really made me take a step back and say wow (hidden among a bunch of things that, frankly, were pretty ordinary and common).

One of the first booths that caught my eye was Chef’n, but it was more because I felt like I was at Bed, Bath and Beyond looking for kitchen utensils. But at closer inspection, I was really impressed not only with the design of many of their products, but also the innovation.

One tool, the Wisecracker is something that you would say you never need, but when it comes time to getting crab meat from the tight shells, you know why you bought it -- the Wisecracker slips inside the shell and when you squeeze the handle, the shell pops open. Genius.

Look for more things from the show in the coming days...
