GDC: A Theory of Fun

by Carol T Chung

GDC-TheoryFun.jpgGame Developers Conference. This is a major event in the game industry attracting over 10,000 attendees. Although I wish I had the arms of an octopus for enhanced multi-tasking, I will do my best to provide you with interesting info from the industry. On Monday and Tuesday, there will be posts in regards to the Mobile Game Industry as well as the Serious Games Summit.

Jill Bliss: Native Flowers Journal

by Carol T Chung

JillBliss-NativeFlowers.jpg

Jill Bliss, founder of blissen, has created the Native Flowers Journal. It's a small blank journal with mostly gridded pages. As you flip through it, drawings of the local flora of the San Francisco Bay Area border the edges of the page spreads. Occasionally the neurotic grid work will disappear leaving only the flowers and the date to define the space.

Maharishi meets B&W

by Josh Spear

dpmhispeaker.jpg
Clearly a nice match, the British company Bowers & Wilkin aka B&W teamed up with style aficionados Maharishi to make these limited-edition DPM 601 speakers. The speakers are wrapped in the house DPM snow camouflage pattern, sprinkled with bonsai trees and dragons. The speaker has all the features you would come to expect from B&W. Priced at £275 the DPM 601's should be available for sale online and in the dpmhi store in Soho London, soon.

Kasabian's Rockin' the House

by Ari Bendersky

kasabian.jpgKasabian.

Their self-titled debut drops on Tuesday, although itís been out in the UK since last fall. These guys, from Leicester in the middle of the country, have a cocksure attitude that rivals the grand swagger of the Gallaghers. Their music reflects both ë60s psychedelia and late ë80s/early ë90s acid house pop in the form of Primal Scream.

I saw them a few nights ago in Chicago in a short set opening for the Music (although the slots shouldíve been reversed because in my opinion the Music are bland and boring) and in the 35 minutes they were on stage, they put on a show that reminded me of the first time I saw the Verve: thrilling, energetic, exciting and chock full of great tunes.

Over the weekend, I interviewed guitartist/songwriter Sergio Pizzorno, who, despite being labeled cocky, was laid back and sincere. These guys are young, want to party on the road and are determined to get everyone listening to their music. Theyíve already won over the U.K. and are working on the States. If you can check them out now, do. If not, theyíll be back to headline their own tour in May.

Check out the album on iTunes UK store; my favorite track is ìReason is Treason.î

adidas Y-3

by Josh Spear

y-3spring.jpg

Yohji Yamamoto's alliance with adidas on Y-3 is one of my all time favorite fashion collaborations. They recently launched their Spring/Summer ’05 campaign, and it’s everything you’d expect and more from Yamamoto. Quirky, clever, and some simply out there-- all Y-3 signature designs. You can view the line of men’s and women’s fashion, a horde of accessories, and some really great classic Yamamoto style shoes on their impressive site. I can’t imagine these pieces will be available for very long-- they move into the rare find and highly coveted state pretty quickly.
