Cool Hunting
Itís been some time since weíve been treated to good Southern Fried Rock ñ so we welcome, with open arms, the Kings of Leon.
Like the Allmans and Lynyrd Skynyrd before them, the Kings of Leon stick to family: the band comprises the three Followill brothers and their first cousin, who all hail from Nashville (also home to one of my favorite singer/songwriters Josh Rouse ñ but more on him soon). Their blend of hard-driving, stoner rock and Downtown New York garage rock appeals to people on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line as well as the other side of the pond. You know these guys must kick ass because Bono and company handpicked them to open up their upcoming North American Vertigo Tour.
Their second album, ìAha Shake Heartbreak,î hits stores February 22, but their first single, ìThe Bucket,î can be heard exclusively on iTunes.
And the intro flash on their website is pretty trippy, too.

A band has to be hot to sell out a decent-sized venue in advance the same week its debut album drops, not to mention selling out in numerous cities. It doesnt hurt that they played five packed shows at South By Southwest. Nor does being featured in a number of magazines and newspapers, including the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly,...
Though they formed last year in Brooklyn, The Kiss Off could easily pass as Manchester natives from the early '80s. The band was founded by guitarist Adam De Rosa and bassist Nathan Lithgow, who lay distorted melodies over catchy drumming and synth drones. Sam Tyndall's vocals complete the band, which sounds something like a better-produced Joy Division or a more brooding Franz Ferdinand. The...
This time of year brings a surplus of album releases and, for us, along with the fresh tunes comes a desire to do little more than stay home and listen to music while watching surf videos. The result is a collection of new faves and old jams, both up-tempo and down, to get you through the leap year. Magnetic Fields: Distortion The first album from...
So we heard the most amazing unsigned band in Williamsburg, Brooklyn the other night. Except we were at a noodle and dumpling bar called Snacky and the band was blaring from an iPod. Norwegian-by-way-of-Sweden Ida Maria and her bandmates are sure to be the next hot-shit-of-the-moment and their song "Oh My God" will not stop playing in our collective brain. Currently self-released on their...
Known for his artistic collaborations with the likes of Tim Hawkinson and Marcel Dzama on his album art and working with Paperrad on a recent video, Beck's concerts, with live video projections, acoustic versions of songs, and props, also embrace a multi-disciplinary approach to music. Beck's mix of inspiration and laidback California style showed up last week in NYC like when he performed of...
The unofficial inaugural CMJ prom was held last night in NYC and featured LA-based Giant Drag rolling with the punches on stage. In spite of bouncers mysteriously removing their monitors midway through their set, fierce lead singer Annie Hardy kept up her dry jokes in between strumming and singing her way through indie pop-meets-shoegaze songs. Micah Calabrese, held it down with her, deftly drumming...
