Welcome Ari, Plus New Categories!
by Josh Rubin
I'm pleased to announce that Ari Bendersky has joined our little collective. He'll be focusing on Music, which is a category many of you have requested be covered here on Cool Hunting. Ari has lots of experience in the biz, which means he gets advances on all the new releases and has the opportunity to interview lots of fun people. Very exciting!
And speaking of new categories, Travel and Food have also been added. We moved a few things around to make sure there's stuff in there, but rest assured new content is on its way. If you have great tips for any of these new categories, definitely send them to us.
John Legend: Get Lifted
by Ari Bendersky
John Legend.
As cliché as it may sound, a true legend was born with the release of Legends debut, Get Lifted. His sultry lyrics and somewhat gruff vocals combined with jazz piano, hip-hop beats, Latin-flavored horns and real-life stories make for some serious lip-smackin R&B.
It doesnt hurt that West produced the album and co-wrote a number of tracks. Or that Legend worked with Lauryn Hill on her multi-platinum Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Or that hes a damn good-looking man with solid roots.
None of that really matters when you get down to the music. And then its all about John Legend.
Artists Workspaces
by Josh Spear
Remember Wooster Collective has a bunch of pictures of his workspace, along with several other artists studios like MCA, Justin Kee's and Kid Acne. It's really great to see the space that artists create their work in. I think I even see a trampoline that doubles as a desk in Choe's space. Anything to get the creative juices flowing, I guess. From messy to clean, we as artists and designers have one thing in common--we love to spread out all over the place.
PALV
by Josh Spear
PALV, a revolution in personal transportation? Well, maybe-- but I don't think a personal air and land vehicle will work anytime soon. Bad traffic jam? No problem, lets just lift off and fly home--wait, don't hit that overpass! What a disaster waiting to happen. Could you imagine the air traffic with a highway full of people lifting off in there little PALV's? I like the idea though, a single rotor that can fold away from a slim 3 wheeled vehicle. John Baker, a Dutch entrepreneur is developing the PALV with Spark Design. Maybe it will catch on for private use in Europe, but I cant imagine our country will ever see anything like this for a long time.
Strandbeest
by Carol T Chung
This is gonna make you freak! Theo Jansen is a Dutch artist who about 10 years ago starting using plastic tubes to create these huge skeleton animal like structures that are powered by the wind. He puts these creatures on the beach where they wait to gather enough wind power to move all on their own. He hopes to be able to someday put herds of them on the beach so they can grow and evolve on their own. The one above reminds me of the ohmu creatures from Nausicaa!!

Brendan Monroe
by Josh Spear
Brendan Monroe graduated from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena with honors. Check out his work and it's not hard to see why. I give him my stamp of approval for a ridiculously incredible body of work. From illustration to sculpture it's clear he has let nothing stand in the way of his imagination. Everything I can find on his site, I really love. He's a California native and currently lives and works in a basement in China Town, LA. Wonderful stuff, and some of the great pieces can even be bought in his online shop.
Counter Strike Street Art
by Carol T Chung
Having found my inner MMOGer (massive multiplayer online gamer), I couldn't pass up the opportunity to show you this tidbit of nerdy culture fascination. Counter Strike is one of the largest first person shooter games online. If it so happens to be one of your chosen past times, check out counter street art. You can download and use sprays of Banksy, Miss Van, and Blek le Rat. Hopefully we can to expect some more of this kind of bad behavior in other MMOGs and even original user tags (at least before game publishers revise their EULAs!)
