Skeletar by Josh Rubin
Stuff like the Skeletar makes me consider starting a So Bad It's Good category. Created by Peter McGilton, this hideously genius guitar epitomizes Death Rock. McGilton's shop, Exotic Guitars, has over a dozen similarly incredible hand crafted designs and all of them are perfectly functional.

Monome
Since the multi-use controller Monome first came out a few years back, it's slowly gained a cult following thanks to its attractive and flexible design. If you're unfamiliar with the device, the Monome is an ultra-tactile, interactive and adaptable MIDI interface that takes advantage of open-source software to manipulate any number of musical parameters. With a pleasing grid-based design, the programmable buttons function as...

Pacemaker
When one of CH's designers tipped us to the Pacemaker, the world's first hand-held DJ system, (right after we also heard about it when in Europe recently), we knew it was worth checking out. Fortunately for us, we had the chance to experience it first hand when co-founder Ola Sars stopped by our offices earlier this week. In person, the "PSP of music's" look,...

Dewanatron: Dual Primate Console
Dewanatrons to make music in real time, suitable for concert performance, live recording, or to be broadcast over the airwaves. The special purpose of Dewanatrons, which are modern solid-state analog instruments, is to grow music live in collaboration with the operators who guide them. Each of the instruments are hand crafted and intended to work in tandem with one another. I had the opportunity...

Gliss: Devotion Implosion
Well schooled in the fuzzed-out guitars and ambient vocals of the shoegaze canon, Gliss brings a wall-of-sound approach to their dark pop compositions. In the two years since their more somber and mopey debut, Gliss is back with "Devotion Implosion." On the record, the Los Angeles triumvirate evoke the best elements of My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain, displaying anthemic qualities...

Harlem Shakes: Technicolor Health
If one were to throw a rock in the western part of Brooklyn, it'd likely hit the supporting member of some transplanted indie rock band. With everyone and their mother's band relocating to the borough, it presents a problem for a five-piece, guitar-driven rock band like Harlem Shakes to rise above the fray. They may get their chance with "Technicolor Health", the band's debut...

Backstage Pass: Rock & Roll Photography
From the utterly personal collection of an anonymous donor, "Backstage Pass" is a book of 120 striking photographs of rock & roll's greatest contributors. As curious as the unnamed collector himself, two compelling qualities define his accumulation of photos. They're all taken during the artist's prime and the musician is actually making eye contact with the camera, affording a small glimpse of the person behind...
