Sneaker aficionados find all sorts of ways to honor their favorite designs. From paintings to web sites, a lot of ground has been covered. Artist Eric Quebral is paying his respects in yet another medium-- wood. He does portraits using mixed wood grains and more recently has been bending maple wood into shoe lace sculptures.

Watermelon-Inspired Design
A few cheeky watermelon-themed products we happened upon recently got us thinking about the summer fruit as a source of design inspiration. While George Nelson's iconic modernist clock ($335 from Pure Modern) is a restrained nod to the melon's oblong shape, most of what's out there appeals to the pink, black and green colorway and the contrast of the exterior rind to the flesh....

Henrique Oliveria: Tapumes
Henrique Oliveria is, at the least, an artist affected by his surroundings. As a student in São Paulo, Brazil, Oliveira harvested the remains of the fence outside his window, which had begun to peel and break in layers of color, and turned it into a hurricane of art for his senior show. Tapumes, Portuguese for the wood Oliveira uses, is ubiquitous throughout São Paulo....

Juxtaposing nature with man-made objects, Pennsylvania-based artist Lee Stoetzel uses woods chosen for their natural flaws to make large-scale sculptures. In this video we visit Lee at his home studio where he's disassembling his life-size replica of a VW bus to transport to an art fair. He also shows us his latest work—giant models of fixed-gear bikes—and his workshop....

Take-G Wooden Robot Toys
Craftsman Takeji Nakagawa, aka "Take-G," doesn't simply make "toys." Rather, he creates tributes to childhood, nature and the future. The artisan crafts things like animals and futuristic robots out of four types of wood: keyaki (a Japanese tree of the genus Zelkova), teak, walnut and white ash.
