The New York Times: Consumed: Sole Mate

by Josh Rubin

Josh Rubin, a blogger and designer based in New York, maintains a Web site he calls Cool Hunting, a regularly updated catalog of things (sneakers, gadgets, household products, etc.) that he finds interesting or inspiring. Not long ago he posted an item about Medium Footwear, a small shoe company founded by designers and ''targeting Cultural Creatives -- a class of people who are responsible for designing and communicating many of the products and services you use today.'' Rubin confessed that he had actually been hip to Medium for about eight months but had held off telling his Web audience because he ''wanted them to be my own little secret.''

DC + Incase + Apple

by Josh Rubin

DC Shoes, Apple and Incase teamed up to create this lovely laptop-skate-backpack. It fits any size Powerbook in the padded laptop sleeve, easily holds a deck strapped to the outside and is designed to integrate your iPod. While I prefer the quiet simplicity of a plain black bag, this urban Winter camo isn't so bad. Though I have yet to see it in person, the pocket configuration seems pretty thoughtful. Once it's available, you'll find it in limited quantities only at and Apple Store or on their website.

Street Memes Walking Tour

by Josh Rubin

Eyebeam created a new web site at streetmemes.com to track street art, stickers, stencils, posters and visual memes (self-replicating ideas) that are posted, copied and mutated in the streets of New York and around the world. Very exciting, though I can't help but wonder whether spelling it all out for the general public defeats the whole purpose of subversive and esoteric street art.

Anyway, as part of tomorrow's Fall For Chelsea one-day-only community arts festival there will be a Street Meme walking tour and scavenger hunt originating from Eyebeam's facility at 540 W 21st Street between 10th & 11th Avenues at 1, 3 and 5pm. More info here.

Mademoiselle In A Tech Menagerie: Digital Life

by Josh Rubin

As many of you have noted, I follow most things from a guy's perspective. For Digital Life, which started yesterday, I asked Carol Chung to check it out and bring back a report for the ladies. Here's her story (details and pictures after the jump):

I met up with my friend Matt outside the Javits Center. Today was the first day of the Digital Life event. The chill was starting to get to me and I gladly finished off my smoke in exchange for the warming glow of all those electronic goodies that awaited us inside. I felt like a kid in a candy store. Where the hell to start??? There were so many different types of booths some offering services, gadgets, home entertainment systems, and of course video games.
